Cong Phuong and his journey back to V-League

Vietnamese football has seen numerous rising stars who eventually disappeared from the center stage. However, Nguyen Cong Phuong's narrative remains unique.

Despite fluctuating form, a career marked by many twists and turns, and a series of injuries, the striker from Nghe An is still a name that receives special attention from fans. And now, as Cong Phuong makes an emotional return in the colors of Dong Nai, many feel they are rediscovering a beautiful part of Vietnamese football's memories.

Not long ago, many feared that Cong Phuong would have to say goodbye to the 2025/26 season due to injury. It was yet another difficult period for a player who has become all too familiar with extended layoffs in recent years.

From his time in the spotlight at the HAGL Arsenal JMG Academy, U19 Vietnam, HAGL, U23 Vietnam, and the national team under coach Park Hang Seo, Cong Phuong has not maintained the stability that was expected. Unsuccessful stints abroad, the pressure of fame, and injury issues have gradually pushed the Nghe An-born striker away from the limelight.

Since the 2022 season, when he last played for HAGL and scored 5 goals in 16 V-League matches, Cong Phuong has not appeared in the V-League. As a result, the image of the once-great star has become a cherished memory for fans. People remember his daring dribbles, his spontaneous goals, and the sense of anticipation whenever Cong Phuong had the ball.

Then, just when many thought that glory was behind him, Cong Phuong made his comeback. Not with loud announcements, but with two goals in the last two rounds of the First Division.

A beautiful free kick into the net against Van Hien University and a recent lob over the head of Thanh Thang, the goalkeeper of Ho Chi Minh City Club, show that Cong Phuong is gradually rediscovering his best form.

That return came at just the right time when Dong Nai needed him most. Coach Nguyen Viet Thang's team now has an additional quality attacking option during the decisive phase of the season. Cong Phuong's presence not only boosts professional strength but also instills greater confidence in the entire squad as they vie for promotion.

Currently, Dong Nai leads the First Division with 47 points, 5 points ahead of second-placed Bac Ninh, with only two rounds remaining. The Southeast region team is very close to winning the championship and securing direct promotion to the V-League if they beat Long An at home this week. That goal is within reach for Cong Phuong and his teammates without having to wait until the final round.

If that objective becomes reality, it will be the second consecutive time Coach Nguyen Viet Thang has led a team to promotion, following his success with Ninh Binh last season. On his journey, Cong Phuong is becoming an important part. And that is something the 31-year-old striker has never achieved in his already eventful career.

Dong Nai brought Cong Phuong on board in 2024 with a three-year contract, expecting him to contribute to the promotion plan. The first season was not truly successful due to injuries and inconsistent form. However, in the second season, things are gradually moving in the right direction.

Cong Phuong's return is not just about professional significance; it is also a story of determination and aspiration. After years of facing pressure, doubt, and career difficulties, the former HAGL striker has persistently worked to find himself again. And that is perhaps why fans have never stopped following their beloved idol.
