World Cup 2026: Spain are the top contenders for the title, Argentina only rank fourth

According to the most recent forecast by the Opta supercomputer, Spain are viewed as the number one contender for the 2026 World Cup championship.

After tens of thousands of different simulations, "La Roja" have the highest probability of being crowned champions ahead of the world's biggest football festival taking place in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Based on Opta's probability rankings in its 2026 World Cup prediction section, Spain have nearly a 16% chance of lifting the golden trophy, higher than all other opponents. France are right behind with nearly 13%, while England and Argentina follow in succession. Other major powers such as Portugal, Brazil, Germany, and the Netherlands are all rated significantly lower.

Spain's dominance does not stem simply from reputation but relies on a young yet exceptionally balanced squad foundation. After winning EURO 2024, coach Luis de la Fuente's team have continued to maintain consistent form and demonstrated that they currently possess a generation of players considered the best in Europe.

Spain are the reigning European champions

In midfield, Rodri remains the tactical brain with world-class ability to dictate and control matches. Alongside him are Pedri, Gavi, Fabian Ruiz, and Dani Olmo — players with the technique and tactical thinking characteristic of Spanish football. Meanwhile, the attack is highly anticipated with Lamine Yamal, the new wonderkid of world football. The Barcelona winger is seen as a symbol of "La Roja"'s new generation, thanks to his speed, ability to create breakthroughs, and remarkable composure despite his young age.

Not only strong in the starting lineup, Spain also impress with squad depth. Opta considers this a key factor helping them surpass France or Argentina in long-term World Cup simulations. With a packed schedule and high injury risk, having many quality players in every position gives Spain a major advantage in the month-long competition.

Another notable point is the stability under coach Luis de la Fuente. Since taking over the team, the strategist has helped Spain rediscover their traditional possession-based identity, while also adding speed and modern transition ability. "La Roja" are no longer entirely dependent on tiki-taka as in previous periods, but have become more direct and lethal.

However, the World Cup is always a tournament full of surprises. Argentina still possess the resilience of the defending champions, France have a world-class star lineup, and England are entering a mature phase. Nevertheless, based on all current data, Opta believe that Spain are the most complete team and have the best chance of going furthest at the 2026 World Cup.
