Guangzhou Leopards: A New Home Defeat Followed by a Crucial Top-of-the-Table Clash

Reporter Wang Wei reports From 0-3 to 1-4, then to 3-4, on the evening of May 24, Guangzhou Leopards fought a fierce battle at Yuexiu Mountain Stadium against the strong Yanbian Longding team, ultimately losing 3-4, ending their four-match home winning streak. In this round, Shenzhen Youth secured a 4-0 away victory over Changchun Yatai, moving to 21 points and topping the standings, while Guangzhou Leopards dropped to second with 19 points. On the evening of May 29 (this Friday), Guangzhou Leopards will host Shenzhen Youth at home.

The match against Yanbian Longding was crucial for Guangzhou Leopards. With the next game at home against Shenzhen Youth, a successful result in both consecutive home fixtures against these tough opponents would give them a significant advantage in the race for promotion.

In their first four home matches this season, Guangzhou Leopards achieved four consecutive wins, scoring nine goals and conceding only one. However, Yanbian Longding proved to be a formidable opponent. Their forward Huang Zhenfei had an impressive start to the season in the first eight rounds, with three goals and one assist, making him a benchmark among domestic strikers. Known for his strong impact, agile movement, and sharp finishing, he served as the team's offensive core. Yanbian's Brazilian forward Giovanni was fast, skillful with the ball, and technically adept, acting as the team's main attacking weapon and most consistent scorer, also netting three goals in the first eight rounds. Additionally, Yanbian's foreign player Domingos ranked high on the assists chart in the China League One.

It was precisely the impact of these three players that caused major problems for the home side Guangzhou Leopards. Just six minutes into the match, Yanbian Longding launched a deadly counterattack. Midfield core Domingos delivered a precise long pass; Huang Zhenfei sprinted forward, shook off Guangzhou defender Xiao Kun's defense, and slotted a shot into the far corner from a tight angle, making it 1-0 for the visitors. In the 23rd minute, Giovanni threaded a perfect through ball, Huang Zhenfei beat the offside trap and converted a one-on-one chance to complete a brace, extending Yanbian's lead to 2-0.

With their defense breached twice in 20 minutes, Guangzhou Leopards made a substitution in the 37th minute. After the break, the home side intensified their attack to turn the tide, but defensive vulnerabilities persisted. In the 52nd minute, Domingos provided another assist, and Giovanni fired a powerful shot from inside the box to make it 3-0 for Yanbian Longding.

Despite trailing by a large margin, Guangzhou Leopards did not give up. Head coach Feng Feng quickly adjusted tactics and made three substitutions in the 62nd minute, bringing on Wang Junjie for Wang Haobin, Yang Hao for Gao Huaze, and Wang Jingbin for Duan Yunzi. In the 72nd minute, Nikon struck from distance; the ball took several deflections before finding the net, reducing the deficit to 1-3 and reigniting hope for Guangzhou.

Buoyed by the goal, Guangzhou Leopards' morale soared and their attacks became more relentless. In the 74th minute, Yanbian Longding launched a swift counterattack; Giovanni sprinted the length of the field and scored a solo goal, extending the lead to 4-1 and seemingly settling the match. Facing desperation, Guangzhou Leopards refused to surrender. In the 79th minute, Wang Jingbin scored with a header, making it 2-4. Just three minutes later, Yang Hao sent a cross from the right and Wang Jingbin slotted home from close range, pulling the score to 3-4.

In the final 10 minutes, Guangzhou Leopards pushed forward with all their might, laying siege to Yanbian Longding's goal and creating several clear chances, but they could not find the equalizer. Ultimately, Guangzhou Leopards lost 3-4 at home, suffering their first home defeat of the season.

After the match, Guangzhou Leopards head coach Feng Feng said, "At the start of the game, we were caught out twice by balls in behind. We failed to take control early and instead allowed the opponent to exploit our space at the back. In the second half, we adjusted the formation and personnel, and the players gave their all, but unfortunately, we ended up losing this match."

In the 16th round of last season, Guangzhou Leopards lost 0-2 away to Yanbian Longding, which triggered a three-match winless slump that ultimately led to the dismissal of then-head coach Li Bing. Now suffering another defeat against Yanbian Longding, this first home loss should serve as a warning for Guangzhou Leopards, especially with a tough upcoming match.

Guangzhou Leopards' next opponent is Shenzhen Youth, who crushed Changchun Yatai 4-0 away in this round, securing their fourth consecutive away victory. Across those four away games, they scored 14 goals and conceded only two, making them the league's best away team in the first nine rounds. After this round, Shenzhen Youth have accumulated 21 points, overtaking Guangzhou Leopards (19 points) to top the China League One standings. In the next round, Guangzhou Leopards will host Shenzhen Youth at home, and the outcome of this top-of-the-table clash will have far-reaching implications for both teams' promotion campaigns.
