Malaysia actually brought a U16 squad (born in 2010) to the tournament, with many players having no international experience. After that defeat, U17 Malaysia showed clear progress. They successively defeated Indonesia, Timor Leste, and overcame U17 Laos 3-0 in the semifinal to secure a spot in the final. Notably, the victory over host U17 Indonesia demonstrated commendable resilience from an inexperienced but spirited team.

In the final, Malaysia will rematch U17 Vietnam – the team that just beat Australia 2-1 to advance. Despite being rated lower, coach Shukor remains confident his team can surprise, especially as this is a decisive match.

History also somewhat favors Malaysia. In their two previous finals, they both achieved victory, defeating Indonesia (2013) and Thailand (2019) to claim the championship. This is a noteworthy detail for U17 Vietnam in the upcoming encounter.
