Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had a forgettable moment right at the start of the match between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the Champions League, facing a wave of fierce criticism from fans on social media.
The German "giant" entered the quarter-final second leg with a 2-1 lead advantage after their victory at the Bernabeu. However, that fragile advantage was quickly erased just 34 seconds into the game, when Arda Güler scored the opening goal from a long distance.
In this situation, Neuer made a serious mistake by passing the ball incorrectly to the midfield, giving the Real Madrid player an opportunity to capitalize. Güler didn't miss the chance, delivering a precise low shot into the empty net as the 40-year-old goalkeeper had advanced and couldn't return in time.
Neuer's disastrous mistake immediately became the center of controversy. Many fans voiced sharp criticism, calling it one of the unacceptable errors at the highest level.
One person wrote: "A foolish mistake from the goalkeeper. Unforgivable."
Another sarcastically remarked: "The world's number one goalkeeper making such an error? Neuer needs to be reviewed."
Even, there was an opinion stating: "Today we see that Neuer is also just human."
Not stopping there, Neuer continued to struggle as Güler completed a double before the 30th minute. From a free-kick situation, the Turkish midfielder left the Bayern goalkeeper rooted, even though he touched the ball but couldn't prevent the goal.
Earlier, Aleksandar Pavlovic managed to score an equalizer for Bayern in a highly dramatic match. Despite the mistake, Neuer luckily didn't become the "villain" as his team still advanced with an aggregate score of 6-4.
In the second leg, Bayern Munich secured a 4-3 victory thanks to late goals from Luis Diaz and Michael Olise, thus avoiding extra time. With this result, the German representative will face PSG, who just eliminated Liverpool, in the Champions League semi-finals.
