U10 Match-Fixing Incident: Triple Failures in Coaching, Competition Format, and Supervision

Written by Cheng Shan Match-fixing is a despicable act deeply condemned in global football. When such a scandal, severely violating fair play, occurs among 10-year-old children, it sends a chilling shock.

On April 4th, in the Beijing division of the China Youth League's boys' U10 group match, children who should have been freely running on the field and building proper competitive values, instead competed to score "own goals" under coaches' instructions, presenting the most disgraceful scene in Chinese football since 2026.

On April 9th, the Beijing Football Association Discipline Committee's penalty notice revealed: On April 4th, during the third round of the 2026 Fifth China Youth Football League Beijing division boys' U10 group, Group B match between Kickers Blue Team and Dongcheng Sports School 16 Orange Team, in the second half, Kickers Blue Team consecutively scored three goals into their own net, followed by Dongcheng Sports School 16 Orange Team consecutively scoring two goals into their own net, with goalkeepers of both teams failing to make effective saves.

The Beijing Football Association's April 9th announcement disqualified both teams from the competition, issued public reprimands, and ordered team officials to criticize and educate the involved players. It publicly reprimanded Dongcheng Sports School 16 Orange Team leader Yu Yang and head coach Cui Yu, and Kickers Blue Team leader Wang Zheng and head coach Jiang Kai, banning them for one year, while reporting to the Chinese Football Association Discipline and Ethics Committee, recommending blacklisting and public disclosure.

On April 10th, the incident escalated online, causing widespread public outcry. In the morning, the Chinese Football Association issued an official statement, announcing a joint investigation with relevant parties into the match conduct and discipline management issues involved. The CFA will impose severe penalties on the involved teams and responsible parties based on investigation results, following regulations.

At noon, the Beijing Football Association issued additional penalties, permanently banning Yu Yang, Cui Yu, Wang Zheng, and Jiang Kai from any football-related activities at all levels in Beijing, while reporting to the Chinese Football Association Discipline and Ethics Committee, recommending blacklisting and public disclosure.

The Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau also announced forming a joint investigation team with the Chinese Football Association to conduct further due diligence on relevant functional departments of the Beijing division organizing committee, match supervisors, referees, and on-site staff, and to strictly handle involved leaders, coaches, clubs, and sports schools for violations. This indicates that investigations and accountability for this most shocking match-fixing scandal in 2026 youth competitions are still ongoing.

This newspaper attempted to contact the penalized coach to understand his thoughts at the time, but he did not respond; the Beijing Football Association负责人 also declined interview, stating only to follow the announcements.

Beyond the already imposed severe penalties and the ongoing broader due diligence investigation, we should focus on why such shocking match-fixing behavior occurred in the U10 group, involving such young children.

Video clips circulating on social media platforms reveal some details of the incident. The video, filmed by Dongcheng Sports School 16 Orange Team personnel, records after Kickers Blue Team scored two own goals, the Dongcheng coach questioning the referee and match supervisor, then calling his players to the sideline. The referee and supervisor insisted on completing the match first, then handling based on evidence afterward, stating they were powerless to address the suspected match-fixing behavior on the field at that moment. The Dongcheng coach retorted angrily, "So we can do the same, right?" Subsequently, young players in the video shouted to teammates, "Kick into the goal."

In the video, during the coach's交涉 with the referee and match supervisor, it was mentioned that this match involved晋级 issues. Clearly, this scandal emerged as an active choice by both sides to avoid strong opponents in the knockout stage. Previously, the most famous severe match-fixing incident of deliberately scoring own goals in the final group stage to avoid strong opponents in knockout was the 1998 Tiger Cup, where Indonesia and Thailand competed to lose to avoid host Vietnam. But this Beijing division "race to score own goals" match-fixing scandal occurred among 10-year-olds, with blatant instructions from coaches and leaders, making its severity even more infuriating.

China's youth football competitions have flourished recently, with the China Youth League becoming the most extensive, participative, highest-level, and socially influential domestic youth football event. Precisely because of this, this match-fixing行为 deserves greater industry attention. The match-fixing scandal involving 10-year-old football youngsters, as stated in the Chinese Football Association's official notice, severely violates sports spirit, severely distorts youth values, and damages the foundation of football development.

Indeed, beyond the already生效 severe penalties and ongoing further due diligence, this incident should prompt comprehensive reflection among China's youth football practitioners.

First, and most crucial: What sports values are our youth football coaches instilling in young players? At age 10, when children's passion for football should be fully ignited and correct sports values established, for追求 short-term results, the最基本 requirement of fair play was utterly disregarded.

Such an appalling scandal公然违背 sports spirit—whether the side first instructing players to score own goals, or the other side creating加倍荒唐 due to不满对手表现—both showed no awareness that match-fixing is an不可触及红线. Having this底线-breaking behavior occur among youth players is更是 "罪大恶极." But both coaches and leaders making such choices无视底线、红线, also exposes deficiencies in youth coach training processes.

Second, when消极比赛 and match-fixing行为 have occurred, do referees and match supervisors have应急处理方案和能力? Do they have timely effective监督与警示 for涉嫌 match-fixing行为, rather than letting赛事监管失于僵化刻板?

Finally, issues exposed at the赛事组织层面 are equally不容小觑. Could赛制设计存在明显缺陷, causing large实力差距 in knockout半区 or明显差异 in出线难度? Could赛制漏洞 become a温床诱发 match-fixing行为?

Currently, the Beijing Football Association has issued penalties严惩, and the Chinese Football Association will surely increase处罚力度. This incident should become an契机 for comprehensively净化 youth football生态圈,矫正 youth football价值观, and推动 youth football良性可持续发展.
