Andy Robertson will depart Liverpool at the end of this season, marking the end of a remarkable nine-year tenure at Anfield.
Since joining Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, Andy Robertson has won two Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy, an FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, along with the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the English Super Cup.
Liverpool stated in a press release: “After nine highly successful seasons at Anfield, the Scotland captain will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
He will depart as a true Liverpool legend, having played a foundational role in the team's recent successes, with a total of 373 appearances to date.”
Robertson's contract will expire this summer, and he has lost his starting position this season following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. At 32 years old, he has only started 15 matches this season.
According to ESPN, Liverpool engaged in negotiations with Tottenham regarding a potential transfer earlier this year after Robertson expressed his desire to leave. However, the 1994-born star ultimately decided to stay at Anfield amid a series of injuries in the team's defensive line.
Robertson shared on the club's official website: “Leaving a club like Liverpool is never easy. This has been a huge part of my life and my family's life for nine years. But for me, players come and go, others do too; the only constant is the club and its fans.
I have had nine fantastic years here. Over the past year or so, I had opportunities to leave but did not take them, because departing from this club is incredibly difficult. And I wouldn't change that for anything.
But I understand football is always evolving, and teams change. I believe now is the right time to move forward and embrace a new challenge in my career.
I will always cherish the wonderful memories from this club. I gave my heart and soul for nine years and have little to regret. I have grown as a person. The club and the fans will always hold a special place for me. It truly has been an extraordinary journey.”
Although he had to wait to secure his position under Jurgen Klopp, Robertson eventually surpassed Alberto Moreno to claim the left-back spot for the remainder of Klopp's reign and beyond, adding numerous trophies along the way.
Robertson added: “I will let others decide whether I am a Liverpool legend; you know me well enough to know I would never claim that myself.
But from my very first day at the club, I wanted to win. I wanted to bring trophies home and help restore Liverpool to the position I believe it deserves.
I am immensely proud to have been part of the exceptional groups that achieved that. This club means everything to me.”
