Barcelona has officially filed a complaint with UEFA after losing to Atlético Madrid, also issuing four firm demands related to disputed referee and VAR mistakes.
Early morning on April 9 (Vietnam time), Barcelona suffered a 0-2 defeat at their home ground against Atlético Madrid during the first leg of the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. However, what stirred public outcry was not just the score, but also the match officiating.
The first turning point occurred in the 44th minute, when young center-back Pau Cubarsí received a direct red card, forcing the Camp Nou hosts to play with a numerical disadvantage for most of the remaining time. This decision faced mixed opinions, but it was not the peak of the controversy.
The most infuriating incident happened in the 54th minute. Following a seemingly harmless play, goalkeeper Juan Musso passed the ball to defender Marc Poblet within the 5.50-meter area. However, the player used his hand to catch the ball before continuing his action—a clear violation of the rules. Despite Barcelona players' vehement protests and the stadium crowd erupting, the main referee István Kovács refused to award a penalty to the home team. Notably, the VAR team also did not intervene to review the situation.
Immediately after the match, Barcelona released an official statement confirming the submission of a complaint to UEFA. In it, the Catalan club accused the refereeing of "not adhering properly to the regulations," thereby directly affecting the match's progression and outcome.
Significantly, Barca presented four specific demands to UEFA. First, they request a formal investigation into the controversial decisions. Second, the club seeks full access to all communications between the referee and the VAR team. Third, they demand public acknowledgment of the errors. Finally, Barcelona calls for appropriate disciplinary actions against the involved individuals.
In the statement, the club emphasized that similar mistakes have repeatedly occurred in the Champions League, creating unfairness and undermining fair-play spirit. This firm stance indicates Barcelona will no longer remain silent regarding contentious decisions, especially as they face the risk of elimination from Europe's most prestigious club-level competition.
