Harry Maguire has made a notable statement regarding Manchester United's ambitions for the upcoming season, asserting that the team can compete for the Premier League title if they make appropriate squad additions during the summer 2026 transfer window.
The English defender has just extended his contract for another year with an extension option, as Manchester United shows strong signs of revival, currently ranking third in the standings. After several disappointing seasons since legendary manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, the Old Trafford side is gradually reclaiming its former stature.
One of the key factors helping Manchester United improve its performance is effective transfer activity. The successful acquisitions of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens, with a total cost exceeding £225 million, have brought a fresh impetus. Among them, Mbeumo and Sesko are the main scorers with 10 goals each, Cunha has contributed 7 goals, and Lammens has provided solidity in goal.
Nevertheless, according to Maguire, that is still insufficient for Manchester United to truly break through. He emphasized that the team needs a squad with greater depth, capable of competing across multiple fronts. Notably, not participating in European competitions this season is both a disadvantage in terms of prestige, but could also become an advantage allowing the team to focus all its efforts on domestic competitions.
“The upcoming summer will be extremely crucial. We need more players, we need higher quality, and we need individuals capable of competing for starting positions”, Maguire shared. He also believes that transfer activities will play a pivotal role, alongside important decisions related to the coaching staff.
In a context where Arsenal leads and Manchester City maintains stability, the Premier League title race is predicted to become even more intense. However, Maguire believes the gap between teams is gradually narrowing, opening opportunities for clubs like Manchester United to surge ahead.
Notably, the defender born in 1993 stated that the Premier League has not weakened as some opinions suggest, but is instead becoming more competitive and unpredictable. This presents both an opportunity and a major challenge for any team aspiring to win the title.
With the target set by the leadership to conquer the title by 2028, Manchester United is clearly facing a crucial turning point. If they effectively utilize the summer transfer window and maintain stable form, the “Red Devils” could return to the title race sooner than expected.
