The 0-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League knockout round first leg has led Barcelona to face a wave of severe criticism from former stars, prominently including Ronald Koeman and Emmanuel Petit.
These two former stars believe the Catalan team is revealing serious problems both in attack and defense, particularly an excessive reliance on young individuals like Lamine Yamal or the injured star Raphinha.
According to Ronald Koeman, Hansi Flick's Barcelona currently lacks diversity in their attacking approach. When Raphinha is absent due to injury, the creative burden falls almost entirely on Yamal. However, this young talent cannot shoulder the entire system alone.

Koeman also emphasized that Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski are struggling in scoring, which further increases the pressure on Yamal. The former Barcelona coach assessed that the team's entire gameplay relies too heavily on these two names; when they are not performing at a high level or not deeply involved in the match, Barcelona immediately loses creativity, rhythm, and confidence.
Koeman also pointed out that in the defeat against Atletico, Marcus Rashford was one of the few who actively supported Yamal and created threats in the attack. However, he believes this is insufficient at the Champions League level, where more players need to take responsibility. The former Dutch strategist even expressed disappointment that Barcelona lost at home, a place that was once a "fortress" feared by opponents. According to him, teams now arriving here believing they can win is a worrying sign.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Petit focused on criticizing Barcelona's defensive system. The former French midfielder argued that the Catalan team has not learned from past failures, especially maintaining a high defensive line despite not having suitable center-backs. Petit stated that Barca is "shooting themselves in the foot" by continuing this risky style, allowing Atletico to exploit the space behind.
In reality, Barcelona did create some scoring opportunities but lacked sharpness in their final finishing. The turning point of the match came when Pau Cubarsi was sent off, before Julian Alvarez scored the opening goal from a free-kick situation. Despite having only 10 men, the home team still tried to find an equalizer in the second half, but conceded again when Alexander Sorloth scored the goal sealing the 2-0 victory for Atletico Madrid, thereby giving Diego Simeone's side a significant advantage ahead of the return leg in Madrid.
