Marcelo drew attention by candidly selecting Lionel Messi as the toughest opponent in his career, while also giving special praise to Cristiano Ronaldo for his professionalism and astonishing consistency.
Legend Marcelo recently shared noteworthy insights about the two world's top superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldowhen asked about the most difficult player to face in his career.
During a conversation on Romário's YouTube channel, the former Real Madrid defender didn't take long to give his answer. When asked to choose between Ronaldo and Messi, Marcelo affirmed: “Messi. He has been and still is an extraordinary player.”
Explaining further, Marcelo believes the Argentine superstar's special quality lies in his superior ability to read the game: “He understands everything very clearly, from every position on the field. When the ball is coming, Messi already knows what he will do next. He is truly dangerous, extremely difficult to handle,” the 37-year-old defender shared.
Throughout his career, Marcelo faced Messi many times, especially in tense El Clásico matches. Statistics show that Messi is the opponent Marcelo encountered most, with 33 confrontations, where the Brazilian defender won 10, drew 7, and lost 16.
These duels became even more challenging for Marcelo due to his playing position. Messi usually started on the right wing before cutting inside, forcing left defenders to face him while using their weaker foot. Marcelo admitted this was a major challenge and left many memorable impressions: “I'm still looking for him, damn it,” he humorously recalled the times Messi got past him.
Nevertheless, when asked about the best teammate, Marcelo praised Cristiano Ronaldo. He said he played alongside many legends like Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, or Ronaldo Nazário, but Ronaldo impressed him the most.
“Cristiano surprised me with his incredible consistency. If he scored 30 goals one season, the next he could score 40,” Marcelo said. He also emphasized that CR7 is the most professional player he has ever witnessed: “Not just arriving early or leaving late, but professionalism in everything—from sleep, training, recovery to playing.”
