Bangladesh U20 women's head coach, Peter Butler, commended the display of Vietnam U20 women's team after the 0-1 loss in the last Group A fixture, AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2026.
Speaking after the match, the English coach candidly admitted his team could not create a sufficiently good game situation against a stronger opponent.
“To be honest, we simply weren't good enough. But I cannot fault the players for their spirit and effort over the past three matches,” Coach Peter Butler shared.
According to the coach who once played for West Ham United, Bangladesh fought to their fullest capability, yet the gap in skill level with the continent's top teams remains very evident.
“I think the players always fought and always stayed within the competitive group. But when facing teams from stronger groups, especially those at a higher level, you immediately see the difference. Vietnam simply was the stronger team and deserved to win.”
Despite having to exit early, Coach Peter Butler still views the tournament positively. He stated Bangladesh brought a relatively young squad aiming to accumulate experience for the future, particularly at youth levels.
“The learning process can sometimes be tough. We lost to stronger teams, but this remains valuable experience. The important thing is to review objectively, draw lessons, and avoid rushing to conclusions.”
Against Vietnam U20 women, Bangladesh played with great effort and organized quite tightly, yet could not prevent the pressure created by the Vietnamese coach and his team for most of the match. With this result, they officially lost hope of securing a spot in the quarter-finals. Conversely, the victory helps Coach Okiyama and his team continue to hold hope for advancing.
