Indonesia is poised to welcome a new naturalized star.

Luke Vickery is set to undergo naturalization as proposed by coach John Herdman, expected to emerge as a fresh factor supporting Indonesia's future goal of upgrading its national squad.

Football Association Indonesia (PSSI) confirms that procedures for Luke Vickery's naturalization are underway, opening the possibility for this young forward to wear the national team jersey soon. This move follows a direct recommendation from head coach John Herdman, indicating special interest in the player currently active in the A-League.

Luke Vickery was born in Hawaii (USA), with an Australian father and a mother of Indonesian descent. This qualifies him to play for three national teams: Australia, USA, and Indonesia. However, the 20-year-old player has decided to choose Indonesia as his international career destination—a positive signal for Indonesian football in its strategy to utilize diaspora player resources.

Currently, Vickery plays for Macarthur FC in the A-League. There, he has made 21 appearances, scoring 4 goals and contributing 1 assist—quite impressive numbers for a young player in development. Previously, Vickery represented Australia U19 in 2024, showing he had an early foundation in international play.

Vickery's choice of Indonesia is seen as part of PSSI's long-term strategy to enhance team quality through mixed‑descent players raised in developed football environments. In recent years, Indonesia has continuously added players of European or American origin, significantly improving competitiveness in Southeast Asia.

If the naturalization process completes, Luke Vickery could certainly become a notable figure in the new generation of Indonesian football. With technical foundation, physicality, and A‑League experience, this player is expected to bring a fresh dynamic to the national team's attack.

Vickery's emergence, if realized, would not only deepen Indonesia's squad but also reaffirm the regional football trend of “globalizing” its forces. This could be a crucial preparatory step for Indonesia's ambition to reach higher levels in coming years.
