Vietnamese-American player emerges in Messi's league, ready to join Vietnam national team

D.C. United has signed young midfielder Gavin Turner (born 2007) as a Homegrown player, notably as this player carries Vietnamese heritage and could represent the Vietnam national team in the future.

Gavin Turner is a product developed directly from the D.C. United academy. He joined the training system in 2017 at the U12 level, before gradually progressing and being promoted to the first team. Previously, Turner gained professional playing experience when loaned to Loudoun United in the USL Championship (American first division) starting in 2022, at just 15 years old.

Here, the 18-year-old midfielder made his professional debut in June 2022, appearing in 18 total matches, contributing 1 assist and over 500 minutes of play. Notably, Turner also left his mark with an assist in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup. His consistent performance earned him selection to the MLS NEXT All-Star event, which gathers 44 top young talents in the United States.

After being promoted to the D.C. United first team, Turner began acclimating to the MLS environment. This season, he has made one substitute appearance after six matches. Professionally, Gavin Turner can play flexibly in various positions such as central midfielder, attacking midfielder, or on the wing. Standing at 1.69m tall (according to Sofascore), he is praised for his ball-handling skills, tactical thinking, and long-term development potential. D.C. United General Manager Ally Mackay also affirmed Turner is a player with "a very high ceiling" and has impressed strongly in first-team training sessions.

At the national team level, Turner previously represented the U15 and U16 U.S. teams, playing 5 matches and scoring 1 goal. However, what particularly interests Vietnamese fans is that his mother is of Vietnamese origin. In early 2026, Turner traveled with his family to Vietnam, including a trip to Ha Giang.

Regarding the possibility of representing the Vietnam national team, Gavin Turner stated he is not yet clear about his citizenship paperwork status from his family side but is willing to consider it if he meets the legal requirements and professional standards. This is seen as a positive signal in the context of Vietnamese football actively seeking quality overseas Vietnamese players.
