UEFA's serious mistake in Arsenal's match

The match between Arsenal and Sporting CP in the Champions League unexpectedly sparked major controversy due to a "phantom yellow card" involving Luis Suarez, before UEFA had to issue a correction.

The clash between Arsenal and Sporting CP in the Champions League quarter-final first leg was not only heated on the pitch but also stirred up by a rare incident related to match officiating. Specifically, a "phantom yellow card" for striker Luis Suarez left players, commentators, and fans alike in a state of confusion.

In the 37th minute of the first half, UEFA's official graphics system suddenly displayed information that Suarez had received a yellow card. This meant the Colombian striker, who already had two previous yellow cards, would be suspended for the return leg at Emirates Stadium.

This information quickly spread and delighted many Arsenal fans, as Suarez is Sporting's main striker this season. However, the surprise lay in the fact that no one witnessed any foul situation sufficient for the referee to issue a card to the 28-year-old forward.

Even commentators like Jon Champion and Alan Shearer expressed confusion over this decision. The incident became even more unbelievable as Suarez was completely unrelated to any controversial play on the field.

In response to the wave of questions, UEFA quickly intervened and provided an official explanation. According to them, this was merely a display error from the graphics system, and Suarez did not receive a yellow card as initially reported.

The player actually penalized was midfielder Hidemasa Morita, a player not facing suspension risk. This means Suarez remains eligible to play in the return leg, providing a significant boost for Sporting CP.

Speaking during the match, commentator Jon Champion confirmed: “We contacted UEFA representatives and were informed that no yellow card was issued to Suarez. It was just a graphics error”.

This incident disappointed many Arsenal fans, who thought their team would not have to face the opponent's most dangerous striker in the return leg.

Regarding the match's progression, the first half ended with a 0-0 score, although Arsenal narrowly avoided conceding in the 14th minute when goalkeeper David Raya excellently blocked Maximiliano Araujo's dangerous long-range shot, sending the ball bouncing off the crossbar. This save became extremely crucial when in the 91st minute, Kai Havertz scored the only goal helping Arsenal secure a 1-0 victory. The North London representative will host Sporting at Emirates Stadium for the return leg scheduled for mid-next week.
