Kai Havertz's late goal not only secured Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on the morning of April 8, but could also bring benefits to numerous other clubs in the Premier League.
When Havertz scored in stoppage time to help Arsenal secure a triumphant victory in Portugal, the away fans naturally erupted in joy. However, many Premier League supporters may not yet realize that that decisive goal also directly impacts their own clubs.
This narrow victory gives Arsenal an advantage ahead of the return leg at Emirates next week, and also officially ensures that at least five Premier League teams will participate in the Champions League next season, after England's top league earned a European performance bonus spot for the second consecutive year.
Each season, UEFA awards an additional Champions League spot to the football associations with the best collective performance across the three European competitions: Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. All nine English representatives in these competitions this season have at least reached the quarter-finals.
Last season, Newcastle United benefited from the extra spot awarded to the 5th-placed team. This season, the remaining bonus ticket is likely to go to a La Liga club.
Meanwhile, if Aston Villa, currently 4th in the Premier League, wins the Europa League and finishes 5th domestically, that would mean at least six English teams will feature in the 2026/27 Champions League. The reason is that the Europa League champion is granted a Champions League berth, similar to how Tottenham qualified this season despite finishing 17th in the Premier League last year but winning the Europa League.
Similarly, if Liverpool wins the Champions League but fails to finish in the top four, then the 6th-placed Premier League team would also earn a Champions League spot for next season.
In the scenario where both Aston Villa and Liverpool win their respective European cups and finish 5th and 6th domestically, even the 7th-placed team would qualify for the Champions League.
Furthermore, if Nottingham Forest wins the Europa League, as they prepare to play their quarter-final first leg at Porto this weekend, the Premier League would also gain a sixth Champions League spot.
Currently, the gap between Liverpool, sitting in 5th place, and Bournemouth in the lower half of the chasing pack is only 7 points. Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Brighton, and Newcastle United therefore still have full hope of joining the race for European spots in the remainder of the season. It can be said that this victory by Arsenal has created a positive domino effect for the Premier League.
