Bangladesh fans express surprise as both men's and women's teams lose to Vietnam

Two matches, two defeats, and a shared disappointment envelop Bangladesh fans after both their men's and women's teams were powerless against Vietnam's representatives.

After both the Bangladesh men's national team and the U20 women's team suffered defeats against Vietnam, a wave of reactions from fans quickly emerged on football forums. Notably, instead of harsh criticism, most opinions leaned towards acknowledging the reality that Bangladesh football is still quite far from the level of the Southeast Asian representatives.

In the FIFA Days friendly match on March 26, the Vietnam national team defeated Bangladesh 3-0 at Hang Day Stadium in a largely one-sided contest. Then, on April 7 evening, the Bangladesh U20 women's team also fell 0-1 to the Vietnam U20 women's team at the 2026 AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup. These consecutive results created a clear sense of disappointment within the Bangladesh fan community, especially since the scenarios of both matches shared many similarities.

One fan candidly observed: "Watching both matches, they shared the same script: Vietnam completely dominated us throughout the game." This viewpoint was also the most agreed upon, because in both contests, Bangladesh's representatives were clearly inferior in terms of controlling the game, organizing play, and creating opportunities. Vietnam not only won by score, but also won by dictating the pace of the match.

Another comment further highlighted that disparity was clearly felt from the spectator's perspective: "The gap between us and them is too wide." The sense of helplessness grew larger as Bangladesh couldn't score even one goal across the two matches. Another fan bitterly admitted: "Even both the men's and women's teams couldn't score a single goal." For many Bangladesh fans, that detail most accurately reflects the comprehensive inferiority.

Nevertheless, not all reactions were pessimistic. A portion of Bangladesh fans believed this outcome wasn't actually too surprising when considering Vietnam football's development in recent years. A notable comment stated: "Vietnam's men's team is visibly strengthening, their women's football even participated in the World Cup, so this result isn't unexpected." This is a perspective that is both realistic, and shows respect for the progress of Vietnamese football.

Closing that series of comments was an attitude of acceptance to learn and continue supporting their own team. One fan shared: "Their football foundation is stronger, and this is precisely an opportunity for us to gain higher match experience. Anyway, always cheering for the Bangladesh national team!" After two consecutive defeats against Vietnam, perhaps the most lingering impression for Bangladesh fans is not just the sadness of losing, but also a clear reminder of the gap their football must strive to narrow.
