Legendary coach Mircea Lucescu passed away at the age of 80 after a heart attack, concluding a glorious career spanning nearly five decades and leaving profound sorrow.
The world of football has received sad news as legendary coach Mircea Lucescu passed away at the age of 80, just five days after resigning as head coach of the Romanian national team.
According to confirmed information, the Romanian strategist submitted his resignation on April 2 after suddenly collapsing during a meeting with the national team. Just one day later, he suffered a myocardial infarction and was taken to the University Hospital in Bucharest for emergency treatment, but could not survive.
Mircea Lucescu is regarded as one of the most successful coaches in the history of world football. Throughout his career spanning nearly half a century, he won a total of 38 titles, ranking only behind two icons: Sir Alex Ferguson (49 titles) and Pep Guardiola (41 titles).
The news of Lucescu's passing was announced on Tuesday, prompting numerous clubs and football organizations to express deep tributes. Galatasaray (where he coached from 2000–2002) stated: “We are deeply saddened to learn of Mircea Lucescu's passing. He was the one who brought the European Super Cup to our country and contributed to the club's 15th championship. We will never forget him.”
Lucescu was still in his position when the Romanian national team lost to Turkey in the semi-final World Cup playoff on March 26, a match that virtually concluded his second tenure with his home country's national team, after his first stint in the 1980s.
During his 47-year career, Lucescu worked at major clubs such as Inter Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Beşiktaş. In 2015, he became the fifth coach in history to reach 100 matches in the UEFA Champions League, joining the ranks of illustrious names like Carlo Ancelotti, Arsène Wenger, and José Mourinho.
Club Inter Milan also expressed condolences: “The entire Inter family shares in the loss and sends condolences to the family of Mircea Lucescu.” Meanwhile, Beşiktaş emphasized that he was the "architect" of the club's historic championship during its 100th anniversary year.
The Turkish Football Federation also paid tribute to Lucescu's immense contributions, affirming that his impact on the country's football, both at club and national team levels, will always be remembered and honored.
