Harry Maguire has signed a new contract with Manchester United after revitalizing his form under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Previously, the English defender's contract with "The Red Devils" was set to expire at the end of this season, and he faced the possibility of leaving the club as a free agent in the summer. However, his impressive recent performances have secured Maguire a new contract extending until June 2027, with an option for an additional one-year extension.
Sharing his thoughts after signing the contract, Maguire stated: "Representing Manchester United is the greatest honor. It is a responsibility that makes me and my family proud every day. I am delighted to continue my journey at this fantastic club for at least 8 more seasons and to play before our exceptional supporters, creating many more memorable moments together.
You can sense the ambition and potential within this squad. The determination to compete for major trophies is clear to everyone, and I believe the best is still ahead of us."
Since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager in January, Maguire has become a pillar in the defense. His consistent performances have helped Manchester United climb to 3rd place in the Premier League. Moreover, the 33-year-old defender has been recalled to the England national team and is competing for a spot in the World Cup squad.
Joining Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 for a record fee of £80 million (€91 million) for a defender, Maguire was quickly appointed captain by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, he later lost the captain's role to Bruno Fernandes under Erik ten Hag in 2023.
Nevertheless, Maguire remains one of the most influential figures in the dressing room. He has helped the club win two trophies in recent years: the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
Football Director Jason Wilcox praised Maguire's role: "Harry embodies the spirit and resilience required to play for Manchester United. He is a professional player who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young and ambitious squad. Harry, like everyone at the club, is determined to help Manchester United achieve sustained and long-term success".
Manager Michael Carrick also praised his player. He described Maguire as an impressive individual with a remarkable career and valuable experience. "Experience is something very hard to quantify. Harry has accumulated a wealth of it at this club and with the England national team", Carrick emphasized.
Currently, Maguire is training with the entire team in Dublin during the non-playing break. Manchester United will resume play early next week against Leeds, but the English defender will be absent due to a suspension following a red card in the match against Bournemouth on March 20.
