Manchester United's Čech or return to challenge Rams, could help Sir Jim save transfer fees! But refuses to be only a substitute.

Manchester United hopes a loaned goalkeeper will return to the team this summer to compete with Sena Rams for the starting position, but this person is not André Onana. The 22-year-old Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek, currently playing for Championship club Bristol City, is the club's favored second-choice goalkeeper. If Vitek agrees to return, Sir Jim Ratcliffe could save money by not needing to purchase another goalkeeper.

Like Rams, Vitek is not afraid of the popular "crowding the box" tactic for corners in English football today. He said: "It is indeed difficult for goalkeepers, fortunately I am nearly two meters tall, so I can handle it well. I like to catch crosses, helping teammates by intercepting or punching the ball away from dangerous areas."

Data shows Vitek stands 198cm tall, and he has started 34 Championship matches this season. In the recent match against Middlesbrough, Vitek not only made three consecutive saves but also rushed to the opponent's goal in the final moments, helping his teammate score an equalizer in the 96th minute.

This season, Bristol City loaned Vitek originally intending for him to be the backup to their No.1 goalkeeper, Irish international Max O'Leary. However, O'Leary injured himself in preseason, Vitek seized the opportunity to replace him, and O'Leary could not reclaim his position after recovery and has since left the club.

If returning to Manchester United, Vitek's goal is not to sit on the bench long-term but to challenge Rams, just like how he replaced O'Leary at Bristol City. "Keeping the No.1 jersey is a very tough task, but I always had the thought of staying here, playing the entire season, that was my goal," Vitek said. "At this stage of my career, I am still young and want to play as many matches as possible. Sitting on the bench or similar situations are not beneficial for me."

Bristol City initially had hopes of promotion early in the season, but recent poor form has dropped them to 16th in the table. Although they lead the relegation zone by 12 points, the risk of falling into League One is not high, the club still chose to change managers, with 78-year-old veteran manager Hodgson returning to the coaching seat to guide Vitek and his teammates.

Players loaned by Manchester United to the Championship for development are usually expected to either enter the first team next or be loaned to the Premier League next time. In 2019, Dean Henderson was loaned to Sheffield United, helped the team achieve promotion, then returned to compete with De Gea at United. However, ultimately due to lack of opportunities, Henderson still left.

Similar to him, Vitek is also unwilling to be Rams' long-term substitute. He is willing to be loaned again, even to the Championship. "Currently, I am focused on the matches at the end of the season, hoping in the remaining 8 games to achieve the best possible results for Bristol City. I just want to give my all for the club and lay a good foundation for next season," he said.

Regarding his future, Vitek said it is not yet decided: "I will maintain close communication with Manchester United to see what is most beneficial for me next season. But I want to play matches, not just sit on the bench. I am very grateful for Manchester United's trust in me, of course, I will progress step by step."

Manchester United's only goalkeeper coach Craig Mawson maintains close contact with Vitek, providing him with evaluations and advice. The Czech goalkeeper, who left home at 13 to pursue football, emphasized that United has treated him very well since he joined at 16.

"I was very young then, naturally couldn't refuse Manchester United's invitation. I knew it would be a challenge: new country, new language. But if you don't put effort into life, you cannot achieve much. Looking back, my choice at that time was correct. It also shaped my personality and character," Vitek recalled. "You all talk about mentality, when you work hard every day, towards a goal, towards the weekend's match, you feel better, more confident. Although I experienced some difficult periods, when you overcome those difficulties, you get motivated, can be more confident, believing in your abilities."

Speaking about his progress at Manchester United, Vitek said: "I have always been alone, because I left my hometown very young to play for Sigma Olomouc, which is over an hour's drive from my home. I often had to stay away for a week, so I got accustomed to traveling and living alone. But I have risen to another level; when I first came to United, my agility and movement were far inferior to now. So I want to thank all the academy staff and goalkeeper coaches for their development of me. From my first loan at 16 to now, I feel I have made huge progress. Playing for one of the world's best youth academies has helped my career."

Vitek's goalkeeper idols are Czech legend Čech and German star Neuer. "Čech is one of the world's best goalkeepers, he set records in the Premier League, the world's top league, that says everything. From childhood, he has been my role model," Vitek explained. "I also try to observe different goalkeepers as much as possible, because everyone has their own strengths. I admire Neuer most, because he has performed exceptionally at the goalkeeper position over the years."

During his time at Manchester United, Vitek was loaned out year after year, starting from the bottom. In 2024 he first played for Accrington Stanley in League Two, then also went to Austria LASK, this season playing in the Championship has been the biggest development for him. "Compared to League Two, Championship players have higher tactical levels, that's the main difference," he said. "I remember playing in League Two, matches were like a scramble! You kick the ball long, everyone desperately fights for the second ball. The Championship is clearly more tactical, each team has different tactics and patterns, so you have to adapt."

Young Vitek has not yet completed his official first-team debut for Manchester United. He has been on the substitute list 7 times, usually in European matches because the matchday squad can include up to 23 players in European competitions, while the Premier League only allows 19.

Vitek has played some preseason matches for Manchester United's first team, trained with David De Gea, André Onana, and Tom Heaton, observing the differences in their pre-match preparations. The 2023 friendly against Wrexham in San Diego, USA, was his first-team match debut. Of course, that match was actually played by United's U21 team under the first team's name.

Vitek also bore blame for his teammate. Starting goalkeeper Nathan Bishop collided with and injured the opponent's star player Paul Mullin, whose lung was pierced by a bone, Wrexham fans naturally angrily jeered Bishop. At halftime, Bishop was substituted by Vitek, fans still wildly jeered him, because thousands of fans didn't notice the goalkeeper had changed, anyway both were unknown United substitute goalkeepers.

The following year, Vitek again played in Manchester United's first-team preseason match, making high and low saves in the 0-1 loss to Norwegian Rosenborg, conceding only one goal. However, United had already decided to loan him out at that time.

Since joining Manchester United in 2020, Vitek has only played one match at Old Trafford, the 2022 Youth FA Cup final against Nottingham Forest. At that time, Carrick, as a special guest of the club, was also watching from the stands at the Theatre of Dreams.

That match attracted 67,492 spectators, setting a record for the highest attendance in the Youth FA Cup. But Vitek had a "butter fingers" moment in front of the West Stand, letting a weak long-range shot slip into his own net, the first-team main goalkeeper De Gea on the stands shook his head in disappointment. Vitek was utterly embarrassed at that moment, two teammates pulled him up. But Vitek regained his footing; among the United academy players from that match, only three remain at the club now, besides Vitek, only Kobbie Mainoo and Dan Gore, the latter will leave sooner or later.

Recalling that mistake, Vitek said: "Yes, it was a big blow, but overcoming mistakes makes you stronger. I think I have proven myself again, through performances season after season. Mistakes are inevitable, this season I also made some errors. But as long as I perform well in the next match, helping the team, it allows me to grow in character and confidence."

Although Carrick served as Solskjær's assistant, Vitek was loaned out year after year, having little interaction with him. "I remember I briefly worked with him, possibly during Ole's (Solskjær) coaching period," Vitek said. "At that time I trained with the first team a few times, it was a very, very long time ago!"
