Manchester United has reached an agreement to renew Harry Maguire's contract, pending official announcement; contract details revealed! The "motivation strategy" proves effective.

Harry Maguire has officially agreed to renew his contract with Manchester United, staying at the club after this season. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news with his signature "here we go."

As reported, Manchester United has reached a verbal agreement with Maguire and his agent. The contract will be formally signed after this season, running until 2028 and including an option for an additional year.

Negotiations took place over salary and contract length. Maguire initially requested a weekly wage of £150,000 for a two-year extension, while United offered £100,000 per week for one year. Eventually, both sides compromised: the new deal is a "1+1" contract with a base salary of £100,000 weekly, but through bonus clauses, weekly earnings can reach £135,000.

Renewing Maguire's contract is a sensible decision for Manchester United. Although he is now 33, he remains a high-level central defender and has consistently served the club. Maguire is highly respected in the United dressing room. He is mature and steady, maintains good relations with most, and has a positive influence. Replacing him could cost tens of millions, funds United need to prioritize for other positions this summer.

Over the past two seasons, Maguire's performances have been impressive, earning him a return to the England national team. After September 2024, this marks Maguire's first selection; he increased his international appearances to 65 against Uruguay, keeping his dream of participating in the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico alive.

Several clubs approached Maguire, whose current contract expires at the end of this season, allowing free negotiations with overseas clubs since January. If offers had come late last year, United would have considered selling to secure a transfer fee, as Maguire was not playing regularly then. Fortunately, every potential buyer preferred to sign him as a free agent in the summer.

The Athletic revealed that four Serie A clubs showed concrete interest, along with three Premier League teams and a top Turkish side. The attraction of acquiring a central defender once valued at £80 million for free is significant.

United knew of these situations but did not rush into negotiations with Maguire; his agent was unaware of the club's intentions. The club believed this approach was beneficial. In recent years, a United manager frankly told a player six months before season-end that he wouldn't get a renewal, leading to a notable decline in performance. Thus, United employed a "motivation strategy," hoping Maguire would prove his worth on the pitch to attract renewal talks.

Maguire succeeded. A crucial factor was that he did not rush back when recovering from injury at 90% fitness, but waited until fully fit. Coincidentally, this coincided with Ruben Amorim's dismissal; Michael Carrick's first match as manager featured Maguire starting against Manchester City.

United won that match, and Maguire naturally started every game under Carrick, helping the team achieve a record of 7 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss. Carrick reinstated the 4231 formation, which Maguire stated he prefers.

However, Maguire's consecutive starts were bound to end; he was suspended due to a red card in the next match against Leeds United. His 600th career appearance had to be postponed, which would also be his 266th game for United. Additionally, he played 166 times for Sheffield United, 75 for Hull City, 16 for Wigan Athletic, and 76 for Leicester City.

Maguire has noticeable weaknesses, such as his turning speed, but his positives outweigh his negatives. Especially his aerial ability is a key asset for United in both penalty areas. "Harry (Maguire) is like a half-full glass of water; you must view it correctly to understand what he brings to the team," a source said. "That's how coaches see him. Every United manager eventually chooses to use him because he provides calmness, composure, and leadership."

Regarding Maguire's strengths, the source added: "His physical power; he's like a magnet for the ball, especially when United defend their own box. Some center-backs only watch their assigned man, lacking strong desire to win the ball. Harry is different; he sees it as his responsibility. He's the tallest, strongest, best in the air, and coaches appreciate that mentality. Particularly in the final stages when teams play more directly, his ball protection is excellent. He's tall and strong, blocking opponents with his legs, making it hard to dispossess him. He can also initiate counterattacks with his ball control."

But not every United manager recognized Maguire from the start: Erik ten Hag didn't, and Amorim didn't either. During managerial changes, Maguire often sent goodwill farewells to most departing coaches, except Ten Hag.

Ten Hag stripped Maguire of the captaincy. In his first season, the English defender started only 8 Premier League games. Ten Hag wanted to sell him to West Ham United for £30 million after the season, but the deal fell through due to compensation issues. Later, Ten Hag began regularly starting Maguire, realizing his value in critical moments, as Maguire repeatedly saved him.

"His threat in the opponent's box, his height and strength, are huge assets," the source continued. "He excels at beating defenders in attacking set-pieces, and those smaller players assigned to mark him. He overpowered opponents, showing bravery and aggression in the opposition penalty area with excellent timing."

Maguire isn't just a physical player; he also possesses excellent foot skills, even dribbling past opponents on the right flank to create crossing opportunities for goals. "In possession, his calmness and composure mean opponents lack confidence to press him, knowing he can dribble past them and pass with both feet. If pressed tightly, he shields the ball, causing significant trouble."

In an interview with the England national team, Maguire stated that negotiations with United are nearly complete, pending assurance of sufficient playing opportunities. In his first six years at Old Trafford, Maguire averaged 41 appearances per season, but this season will be fewer as United have only 40 total matches. Maguire also missed 9 league games from late November due to a thigh injury.

Considering his age, even if United return to the Champions League next season with over 50 matches, he likely won't start every game. But it won't be like early this season when Amorim preferred using left-back Luke Shaw alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Lenny Yoro, leaving Maguire as a substitute.

Yoro and Ethan Haven are young defenders Maguire highly regards, but they are only 20 and 19, needing time to improve, especially ensuring consistency. Both can learn from Maguire and injured players like De Ligt and Lisandro Martínez. He can assist the youngsters in many aspects, particularly in handling the pressure of being a Manchester United player.

Around 2022, Maguire was a laughingstock in international football, subjected to online abuse, but he eventually vindicated himself through performance and earned praise. Maguire remains himself; his flaws haven't suddenly disappeared.

"Some criticism is valid; Harry sometimes holds the ball too long, slowing attacks and allowing opponents to organize defense," the source said. "Especially with Ruben (Amorim)'s fixed 343 formation, opponents just need to hold defensive positions without much movement. In such cases, if defenders pass slowly, opponents' defense becomes easier. In some matches, Harry should move the ball quicker, change his position, disrupt opponents' shape, and create different passing angles."

Nevertheless, the flaws do not overshadow the merits. Renewing Maguire's contract with an option for an additional year, deciding on further cooperation based on circumstances a year later, is a decision welcomed by the club, teammates, and United fans. Mock the meme, not the man; always respect those who strive.
