Prior to the rematch against Vietnam, Dion Cools publicly declared his goal-scoring ambition, hoping to replicate the mark he left in the previously disputed "4-0 win."
After a thorough preparation period, the Malaysian national team is approaching the match against Vietnam with a determined mindset. At the press conference on March 30th, key defender Dion Cools demonstrated readiness both physically and mentally, stating that the entire team has the best foundation to enter one of the most anticipated matches in the region.
The star of Malaysian-Belgian descent mentioned that the one-week training camp in Bangkok helped the team reach optimal condition. He emphasized: “After one week of training in Bangkok, we are in the best physical condition and ready. The match will be very difficult, but we will give our utmost effort.” From these statements, it is evident that Malaysia not only aims to compete evenly but also harbors ambitions to make a difference against Vietnam.
Without hiding his determination, Dion Cools further affirmed that the fighting spirit is always elevated to the highest level whenever he wears the national team jersey. The defender currently playing in Japan shared: “For the national team, we always strive to perform, and tomorrow’s match is no exception. The whole team has prepared well and hopes to achieve a positive result. We have analyzed the opponent’s squad.”
This is a noteworthy detail, as Malaysia clearly is not entering the match passively. Studying Vietnam thoroughly shows that the coaching staff and players of the "Malayan Tigers" have prepared systematically for this crucial encounter. In the context of the two teams always producing tense contests, every tactical detail and psychological state could become decisive factors.
Dion Cools is also a name of particular concern for Vietnam’s defense. In the previous encounter, he made his mark by scoring in Malaysia’s 4-0 victory over Vietnam. Although that result was later overturned to a 3-0 loss due to the team’s rule violation, the standout performance of the 1996-born defender still makes him a threatening element.
Most notably, the leader of Malaysia’s defensive line frankly expressed his desire to score against Vietnam again. He said: “We hope to score against Vietnam. Of course, anyone wants to score for the national team, and I do too. I want to score if possible, but the team’s overall performance remains the most important.”
This statement partly reflects the spirit Malaysia brings into the match: confident, proactive, and not hiding ambitions. While playing for Cerezo Osaka in Japan, Dion Cools is expected to continue playing a key role in coach Peter Cklamovski’s system. And if this captain continues to speak up timely, the Vietnam national team will certainly face a challenging test.
