Vietnam's national team will gain nearly 10 points on the FIFA rankings if they defeat Malaysia, reopening the path back into the world's top 100.
According to the latest rankings published by FIFA, the Vietnamese national team has risen to 103rd in the world, ranking 18th in Asia. This is seen as a positive step forward for the Golden Star Warriors as the entire team aims for important international goals in 2026.
This will be a major motivation for Vietnam's national team to return to the FIFA top 100 this March. According to calculations by Football Ranking, if they secure a victory over Malaysia in the return match, Vietnam's national team will gain up to 9.75 points. Additionally, if they defeat Bangladesh in the preceding friendly match, the "Golden Dragons" could also accumulate approximately 4-5 more points.
With a gap of just over 10 points behind Tajikistan, who holds the 100th position on the FIFA rankings, and given that Tajikistan also faces a crucial match against Philippines for Asian Cup qualification, the opportunity for Vietnam's national team to return to the FIFA top 100 this March is very promising. This reaffirms the status of the leading team in the Southeast Asian region.
The improvement in Vietnam's national team's ranking previously stemmed from gaining additional points related to the match against Malaysia in the second round of Group F, Asian Cup 2027 qualification. Earlier, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) awarded a 0-3 loss to Malaysia in both matches against Nepal and Vietnam due to violations of player eligibility regulations.
Thanks to this decision, the Vietnamese national team regained 13.91 points that were previously deducted, raising the total points to 1,213.62. Consequently, the team climbed 5 places on the FIFA rankings, advancing to the 103rd position in the world.
Immediately ahead for the national team are two matches during the FIFA Days, including a friendly against Bangladesh and the crucial match against Malaysia in the final Asian Cup 2027 qualification round. Chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation - Tran Quoc Tuan emphasized that these matches are not only of professional significance but also directly impact the goal of reaching the top 100 on the FIFA rankings, requiring the entire team to maintain high concentration and maximize their capabilities.
