OFFICIAL: Canadian Legend Who Scored 40 Goals Joins Indonesian National Team

The Indonesian Football Federation has appointed Steven Vitoria, a former Canadian national team player, as an assistant coach for the Indonesian National Team.

According to CNN Indonesia, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) has appointed former Canadian national team player Steven Vitoria to the role of assistant coach, working alongside head coach John Herdman in the new journey with the Indonesian National Team.

Vitoria was spotted at the Fairmont hotel, where the Indonesian National Team is staying during the FIFA Series 2026. The former player who scored 40 goals in his career (according to statistics from Transfermarkt) appeared with Herdman to welcome Elkan Baggott and his teammates upon their arrival.

Vitoria is not unfamiliar to Herdman. He was a Canadian national team player under the English strategist and even served as captain. Additionally, this former defender also played alongside Egy Maulana Vikri at Lechia Gdansk during the 2018/19 season, so he has some understanding of Indonesian football.

In 2018, after the Canadian National Team failed in the World Cup qualifiers, John Herdman was appointed to lead the men's team. Initially, Vitoria was not part of this coach's plans and hardly played that year, despite having been a regular choice before.

However, over time, the star born in 1987 gradually gained Herdman's trust and became a crucial pillar, playing a major role in helping the North American representative secure a spot in the 2022 World Cup. Throughout the 2021 qualifying campaign, he was an irreplaceable figure.

As a result, Vitoria was given the captain's armband for the Canadian National Team. When John Herdman left the team in 2023, Vitoria also bid farewell to the national team.

Before retiring in 2025, the last club Vitoria played for was Boavista. In the 2024/2025 season, he also played alongside Layvin Kurzawa.

Not only adding personnel for the assistant position, Herdman has also strengthened the coaching staff by appointing goalkeeper coach Andrej Kostolansky, who will work in coordination with Damian van Rensburg.

During this training camp, the archipelago nation's team will face Saint Kitts & Nevis in the semifinals of the FIFA Series 2026. This match will take place at 20:00 on March 27.
