Supercomputer predicts Tottenham's fate after worst season in nearly 50 years

Based on Opta's supercomputer forecast, Tottenham Hotspur has a high chance of escaping relegation this season.

The "Spurs" just suffered a devastating 0-3 defeat at home against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, a result that puts immense pressure on the North London club.

This is the first time since 1977 that Tottenham faces such a clear relegation threat. The team under coach Igor Tudor currently ranks 17th in the standings, only 1 point above West Ham United, who are in 18th place.

Tottenham's form is alarming. Their last Premier League win came against Crystal Palace on December 28th, which is 13 matches ago. In Tudor's first five games, Spurs earned only 1 point, a statistic highlighting a severe decline.

However, according to Opta's data, despite losing 6 of their last 7 matches, Tottenham is predicted to successfully stay up by a margin of just 1 point. Opta's supercomputer forecasts that West Ham will be the team to take the final relegation spot, alongside Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Specifically, Tottenham's relegation probability is calculated at 27.10%, significantly lower than West Ham's 57.48%. Meanwhile, the win over Tottenham greatly improved Nottingham Forest's position, with their relegation chance now only 8.74% – a fairly safe figure for coach Vitor Pereira's side.

For other clubs, Leeds United faces a relegation risk of 6.80%, while Crystal Palace is almost completely safe with a probability of just 0.05%, according to Opta's assessment. Conversely, Wolves and Burnley's situations are nearly "sealed" with relegation rates of 99.94% and 99.89% respectively.

In the final 7 rounds, Tottenham will travel to Sunderland, Wolves, Aston Villa, and Chelsea, and host Brighton & Hove Albion, Leeds, and Everton at home – a schedule considered quite challenging.

Opta's model also predicts final points totals. Wolves are projected to finish bottom with 25 points, one point behind Burnley. West Ham is predicted to get 37 points, while Tottenham ends the season with 38 points – just enough to stay up. Nottingham Forest is expected to have 41 points, Leeds 42 points, and Crystal Palace 48 points.

Speaking after the heavy defeat to Nottingham Forest, assistant coach Bruno Saltor tried to remain optimistic: "Currently every mistake is against us, every small detail is unfavorable and that directly affects the players. However, it's clear they fought hard. We are in a difficult situation, everyone understands that. In the first half, the team played better and needs to maintain that stability."

He added: "We were trailing 0-1 and wanted to play more aggressively with players returning from injury. The plan didn't go as expected but that was the initial intention. This defeat is painful, but the fans were fantastic throughout the match."

Saltor emphasized unity: "We must continue, because everyone cares about Spurs. This is a family and we want to get out of this situation. I believe 100% that the team will overcome it."

Tottenham now has a three-week break before the next match. If he remains in charge, Coach Tudor hopes to welcome back key players like Mohamed Kudus and Rodrigo Bentancur after the national team break.

In the title race, Opta's supercomputer also predicts Arsenal will win the championship, while the remaining top 5 spots belong to Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool.
