The traditionally rich club with seven European titles has officially decided to part ways with the head coach after a series of results that did not meet expectations.
Recently, Sevilla's official website announced the dismissal of manager Matias Almeyda. This decision was made after Sevilla, the greatest club in Europa League history with seven championship titles, suffered a 0-2 home defeat against Valencia in La Liga's 29th round. This loss caused the Sanchez Pizjuan-based team to drop to 15th place in La Liga with only nine rounds left in the season, leaving them just three points above the relegation zone.
Almeyda was appointed as Sevilla's head coach last summer after his tenure at Greek club AEK Athens. Despite a positive start, Sevilla significantly declined in the second half of the season. Additionally, the Argentine strategist is currently serving a seven-match suspension for confronting a referee, preventing him from coaching since mid-February.
It is expected that Sevilla's leadership will reveal the replacement name soon. Last summer, Sevilla had close contact with Jose Bordalas, when the manager of Getafe was reportedly ready to move to Sanchez Pizjuan. However, according to Cadena SER, Sevilla's leadership rejected this option, believing he was unsuitable, as sporting director Antonio Cordon wanted a coach with a different style, and ultimately chose Almeyda.
Currently, the situation has reversed for Sevilla as they face relegation risk at the season's end, unlike Getafe. The Madrid-based team is now only three points behind the European qualification group and seven points ahead of Sevilla. Due to the international break, Sevilla will have about two weeks to prepare before facing Real Oviedo, a struggling opponent.
