Matthijs de Ligt is at risk of being sidelined for the rest of the season due to a back injury, worrying manager Michael Carrick in this pivotal phase as Manchester United competes for a top 5 spot.
Manager Michael Carrick admits he cannot guarantee Matthijs de Ligt will return to play in the remaining part of the season, although Manchester United still hopes the Dutch defender can recover before the campaign concludes.
Since his last appearance on November 30, contributing to Ruben Amorim's side's 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace, De Ligt has been unable to play due to a persistent back injury. As the season enters its decisive phase with 8 final matches, "The Red Devils" face significant pressure in the top 5 race to secure a Champions League spot.
During the away trip to Bournemouth, De Ligt was again absent. Carrick shared: “It's very unfortunate for Matthijs. He is working hard to return, but the back issue is genuinely complex. We will do everything possible to help him recover as quickly as possible.”
Due to a less congested schedule, De Ligt will definitely be out at least until mid-April. However, Manchester United's leadership still aims to help the 26-year-old defender return before the season ends.
When asked about the possibility of De Ligt not playing any more matches this season, Carrick candidly stated: “It's truly difficult to say because this injury has lasted so long. With back problems, sometimes you think it's fine, but things aren't like that. We need patience and further monitoring.”
The English strategist also did not rule out the possibility that De Ligt may require deeper intervention, even surgery, though he preferred not to elaborate at this current moment.
De Ligt's absence further complicates Manchester United's defensive line as Lisandro Martinez is also unavailable. In this context, Harry Maguire has seized the opportunity, consistently starting since Carrick took charge and demonstrating stable form.
The impressive performance of the 33-year-old defender has even brightened his prospects for a return to the England national team in the upcoming gathering, while also raising the possibility of a contract extension at Old Trafford after this season.
