Coach Michael Carrick harshly criticized the refereeing after Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, when his team was denied a penalty but then had to concede a penalty in a similar situation, and also lost Harry Maguire due to a red card.
When Manchester United were leading 2-1, Amad Diallo appeared to be pulled and pushed inside the penalty area, but VAR determined there was insufficient contact to award a penalty. Just minutes later, referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the penalty spot after a similar collision between Maguire and striker Evanilson from Bournemouth.
Carrick shared with Sky Sports: "I think both situations were penalties and that was a major turning point in the match. After that, everything became chaotic. It was a very crucial moment, and I don't understand how you can call one a penalty and ignore the other, it's crazy."
"If he (Attwell) thinks the first situation was a penalty, then the second one should be too. I don't understand why it wasn't called."
Not receiving the penalty in Amad's incident meant Manchester United, from potentially leading 3-1, ended up losing the win, as the match concluded 2-2. Nevertheless, Carrick praised his players' fighting spirit after Maguire was sent off.
He said: "We had to play with ten men for a long period and had to adjust. The substitutes who came on did very well to stabilize the game. I am pleased with how the whole team overcame the difficult final minutes."
Manchester United enter the international break in third place on the table with 55 points, trailing leaders Arsenal by 15 points and Manchester City by 6 points. Carrick, who was appointed interim manager in January after Ruben Amorim's departure, stated he is not worried that the break will affect the team's momentum.
