Coach Kim Sang Sik is strict with Vietnam's U23 generation.

Coach Kim Sang Sik's decision to summon only three U23 players to the Vietnam national team for the March 2026 assembly is not a disregard but a definitive statement on selection standards. To earn a spot in the national squad, talent is not enough; true level and form are crucial.

The national team'sVietnam squadpreparing for matches against Bangladesh and Malaysia clearly reflectsCoach Kim Sang Sik'splayer selection philosophy.

Among the young players who won the bronze medal at the 2026 Asian U23 Championship, only three names are included: Tran Trung Kien, Khuat Van Khang, and Nguyen Nhat Minh.

The remainder are retained to serveVietnam U23in the CFA Team China 2025 tournament, which coincides with the same period.

This decision is not merely about resource allocation but reflects a reality: the current U23 generation, despite success at the continental level, still lacks the stature to compete for positions in the national team.

After the V-League resumed, most young players performed dimly. The Asian bronze medal thus holds more symbolic value than proof of individual caliber.

In that picture, Khuat Van Khang is a rare bright spot. The Viettel player maintains stable form with goals and assists, showing clear progress.

But Van Khang is not a new discovery, as the 23-year-old midfielder has already been tested in the national team before. That further illustrates the vast gap between "having potential" and "meeting national team standards."

Other cases like Dinh Bac or Ly Duc are partly interrupted due to suspensions or personal issues.

Among them, Dinh Bac is a rare name who could squeeze into the Vietnam national team's attack, especially when the team lacks a truly standout domestic striker. However, potential still needs to be verified by stability, which young players often lack.

Compared to the golden era under Coach Park Hang Seo, the difference is stark. Back then, Vietnam's U23 generation after the 2018 Changzhou miracle almost stepped directly into the national team and became pillars.

The Vietnam national team has not entered a comprehensive transition phase, and experienced pillars still hold crucial roles. Additionally, Coach Kim Sang Sik has a squad with many naturalized stars and overseas Vietnamese players.

The lesson from Coach Philippe Troussier's tenure also informs Coach Kim Sang Sik. He is cautious to avoid backlash and maintain motivation for all. To step up to the national team, U23 players must prove themselves not only shining in one tournament but maintaining form at the club level, which most accurately reflects capability.

The message from Coach Kim Sang Sik is very clear: no privileges for any generation. Even seasoned stars like Tien Linh were dropped due to form, so U23 players must double their efforts. That journey is still long, and only the most persistent can pass through the door Coach Kim Sang Sik has set.
