The World Football Federation (FIFA) has announced a significant shift in how the national team rankings are operated, creating a major opportunity for Vietnam to improve its position as early as March 2026.
Accordingly, starting from the March 2026 international match series, the rankings of men's and women's national teams will be updated in real-time during FIFA Days matches. This is a notable change compared to the past, when rankings were only announced after the entire match series concluded.
The new mechanism allows fans to follow the point fluctuations and ranking changes of their favorite team directly after each match result. This promises to provide a more dynamic and exciting perspective on the global ranking race. For men's football, this system will be implemented starting March 2026, while women's football will begin in April 2026.
With the new mechanism in place, the Vietnam national team faces a strong opportunity for ranking improvement due to the repercussions from AFC's decision regarding the Malaysian team.
Specifically, AFC awarded 3-0 default wins to Nepal (March 25, 2025) and Vietnam (June 10, 2025) against Malaysia due to the use of an ineligible player, under Article 25.1. Additionally, the Malaysian Football Federation was fined USD 50,000 and required to pay within 30 days.

The Vietnam national team leads Group F following AFC's decision.
This decision triggered significant changes in Group F. Malaysia lost 6 points, now has only 9 points, its goal difference dropped to +2, and it lost the top spot. Conversely, Vietnam was awarded 3-0 wins, raising its total points to 15, goal difference to +13, and securing the top position with a perfect record after 5 matches. With a 6-point lead and only one match remaining, Vietnam officially qualifies for the Asian Cup 2027 and is guaranteed to top Group F ahead of the match against Malaysia on March 31, 2026.
Beyond the competitive significance, AFC's decision also helps Vietnam "recover" approximately 13.99 ranking points previously lost. Adding about 10.5–11 points from the two awarded wins, the total point increase is around 24–25 points. Consequently, Vietnam's ranking points are projected to reach approximately 1,214 points, thereby moving up the FIFA ranking table.
Notably, in this March period, if Vietnam secures wins against Bangladesh in the friendly match and against Malaysia in the qualifier, it could accumulate an additional 11–13 points. This would significantly open the door for entering the FIFA Top 100.
Improving the ranking is not only a matter of prestige but also creates a major advantage for Vietnam in upcoming tournaments. A higher position on the FIFA ranking table will benefit the team in seeding groups for the Asian Cup 2027 and the World Cup 2030 qualifiers.
