Southeast Asian football approaches a historic milestone never achieved before.

Thailand and Philippines are compelled to win in the last match of the 2027 Asian Cup qualification stage. Should both advance, Southeast Asia may debut with up to five teams.

The Thai national team and the Philippines face the imperative task of winning their final matches in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers to secure a place in the finals.

Currently, 21 teams have already qualified for the continental football event hosted in Saudi Arabia. Southeast Asia has guaranteed three representatives: Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore.

Notably, the Vietnamese team secured qualification as Group F winners even before playing the final round, after Malaysia was handed a 0-3 defeat in both matches against Nepal and Vietnam due to fielding an ineligible player. This result puts Vietnam top with 15 points, leading Malaysia by 6 points.

Indonesia was the first Southeast Asian representative to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup by advancing deep in the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers. Meanwhile, Singapore also earned an early spot after topping Group C in the qualifiers.

The number of ASEAN representatives could potentially rise to five if Philippines and Thailand accomplish their mission in the decisive matches. Currently, Philippines ranks second in Group A with 13 points, equal with Tajikistan but inferior in goal difference. The two teams will face each directly on March 31 at Hisor Central Stadium for the top position.

Similarly, Thailand also places second in Group G with 12 points, tied with Turkmenistan but trailing in goal difference. The "War Elephants" will host this same opponent at Rajamangala Stadium in a crucial match. Both Thailand and Philippines have no other option but victory to secure advancement.

If both teams pass the qualifiers, Southeast Asian football will historically have five representatives at the Asian Cup for the first time. Previously, the region's highest record was four teams participating in the 2023 tournament: Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand.
