Coach Koji Gyotoku aims to guide Cambodia to their inaugural semifinal appearance in the ASEAN Cup 2026, even though they are in a group featuring Vietnam's national team.
Coach Koji Gyotoku has publicly revealed a highly ambitious goal to lead the Cambodia national team to their first-ever semifinal in the ASEAN Cup 2026. This would be a significant advancement if the team can progress beyond the group stage, an achievement they have never accomplished despite multiple previous participations.
Despite having participated nine times in the Southeast Asian championship, Cambodia has never progressed beyond the group stage. However, their positive performance in the most recent edition provided many optimistic signals, laying a foundation for the coaching staff to believe in a breakthrough in the near future.
He shared: “In the previous edition, we drew 2-2 with Malaysia and defeated Timor-Leste 2-1 at home. Those were very good performances. Although we lost to Singapore and Thailand away, against Thailand, the players played with great effort and caused the opponent considerable difficulty.”
Entering the 2026 tournament, the Japanese strategist stated that Cambodia's squad will undergo significant changes to enhance competitiveness. He shared: “This time the squad is different; there will be new players and I will build a new tactical system. We will try our utmost, and the goal is to reach the semifinals. The objective is very clear. Cambodia has never advanced past the group stage, and this time we want to achieve that.”
The challenge for Cambodia is considerable as they are placed in Group A featuring several strong opponents, including the reigning champion Vietnam. They will successively face Singapore, Indonesia, and the remaining opponents before concluding the group stage with a match against Vietnam.
Nevertheless, Coach Koji Gyotoku maintains faith in the team's progress, particularly from naturalized players and the increasingly improved quality of the domestic league. With thorough preparation and clear determination, Cambodia is aiming for a historic goal: their first appearance in the regional semifinals.
