Vietnam's national team officially securing a spot in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 has generated significant attention from Southeast Asian media and fans.
The situation in Group F of the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers completely changed after a ruling from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Accordingly, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) was found to have violated Article 56 by using an ineligible player.
After reviewing the documents and explanations, AFC decided to cancel Malaysia's two victories against Nepal (2-0) and Vietnam (4-0). Instead, the team was deemed to have lost 0-3 in both matches, while Nepal and Vietnam were awarded wins with the same score.
The penalty caused Malaysia to lose 6 points, dropping to second place with 9 points. Meanwhile, the Vietnam team gained crucial points, rising to lead the group with 15 points after 5 matches. With a 6-point gap over their opponent before the final round, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team officially secured the sole ticket from Group F to the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Finals in Saudi Arabia.
This is Vietnam's third consecutive qualification for the AFC Asian Cup Finals. This achievement is a regional record for Southeast Asia. The reputable fanpage Asean Football drew attention with the headline: “Vietnam 3x in a row to Asian Cup” (Vietnam qualifies for the Asian Cup three consecutive times).
Not just reporting the news, Asean Football also praised the consistent stability and steady progress of the Vietnam team over many years. Their consecutive appearances at Asia's biggest tournament are seen as clear evidence of the sustainable development of Vietnamese football.
This achievement holds significance not only professionally but also elevates the stature of the "Golden Star Warriors" within the region. In the context of intense competition among Southeast Asian national teams, maintaining a stable presence at the continental tournament is no easy task. Therefore, Vietnam's feat has garnered admiration from regional media and fans.
The AFC Asian Cup 2027 Finals will take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7th to February 5th, with 24 teams participating.
