From the status of world champions to a state of disorientation in less than a year is an alarming journey, raising further doubts about Chelsea's strategy in their ambition to sustainably return to Europe's elite ranks.

The Blues received much praise for winning the FIFA Club World Cup last summer despite not being highly rated. However, their title of "the best team on the planet" always felt somewhat hollow. In reality, they were not even the strongest team in England last season, and Paris Saint-Germain underscored that point unmistakably by defeating them.

Chelsea thảm bại 0-3 trước PSG ngay trên sân nhà ở lượt về vòng 1/8 Champions League

Chelsea suffered a 0-3 defeat to PSG at home in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

The 0-3 loss at Stamford Bridge resulted in an aggregate 2-8 defeat over two matches, one of the heaviest losses in the club's European history. The reigning UEFA Champions League winners ruthlessly exposed long-standing flaws in Chelsea's squad, issues that existed even before head coach Liam Rosenior took over, explaining why his position was not threatened after such a disastrous night.

Chelsea's squad-building approach has long been controversial, with spending exceeding £1.5 billion in less than four years under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. The relationship between Boehly and Behdad Eghbali has recently shown signs of strain, but both still appeared together in the stands, even shaking hands before kick-off as a gesture of reconciliation.

However, what they witnessed afterwards was a brutal "exposure" of the squad they had painstakingly built. For a long time, it has been abundantly clear that Chelsea needed upgrades in central defense, goalkeeper, and attack. Levi Colwill's long-term absence only worsened the situation, but the actual problems are far deeper.

Hope for a miraculous comeback vanished after just 15 minutes, as the defense continued to make mistakes – a "chronic issue" for Chelsea recently. This, combined with PSG's frightening ruthlessness, became the most defining feature of the tie. The visitors took 8 shots, 5 were on target, and they scored 3 goals.

Chelsea đang trải qua mùa giải đầy thất vọng

Chelsea are enduring a deeply disappointing season.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's opening goal in the 6th minute was executed neatly, but originated from a simple long ball by goalkeeper Matvei Safonov that Mamadou Sarr failed to handle. In his Champions League debut, Sarr had to play on his weaker side at right-back due to injuries to Reece James and Malo Gusto, but this error was more individual than positional.

Similarly, Bradley Barcola's goal in the 15th minute was a masterpiece, but he had too much space to operate. The scant optimism before the match quickly evaporated from the stadium atmosphere.

It was not the first time this season that the name Roman Abramovich was sung by the home fans. The former Russian owner is still remembered as a symbol of a period when the club knew how to compete at the highest level.

News earlier this week that Chelsea were fined £10.75 million for making £47 million in secret payments to unregistered agents between 2011–2018 serves as a reminder that the old era was not perfect either. Yet, there were successes: Champions League qualification, UEFA Conference League victory, and last summer's achievements in the USA.

Nevertheless, Chelsea are still in a painful "transition" phase as they reshape their identity post-Abramovich. The pace of change is dizzying: over 50 players signed, and Liam Rosenior is the fifth permanent head coach. The youngest squad in Europe offers great potential, but clearly still needs more experience.

Previous coaches like Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca both emphasized the need to add experienced players, especially in central defense. Rosenior also requested this during the January transfer window, but Chelsea missed out on Jeremy Jacquet, who later joined Liverpool.

Chelsea đang chìm trong cuộc khủng hoảng chưa tìm thấy lối ra

Chelsea are sinking in a crisis with no clear exit path.

Recalling Sarr from Strasbourg was only a stopgap solution, and the result is Chelsea's defense being perpetually unstable. Wesley Fofana even had to sit on the bench, while rotating between Robert Sánchez and Filip Jørgensen at goalkeeper deprives the team of stability, a crucial element for top clubs. The statistic of only one clean sheet in 14 matches tells the whole story.

Of course, Rosenior is not entirely blameless, and fans remain ambivalent about him. When Chelsea trailed 0-2, he substituted Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, and João Pedro before the 60th minute, a decision seen as "raising the white flag." A section of the crowd booed, and less than three minutes later, Senny Mayulu sealed the 3-0 score for PSG, prompting thousands of fans to leave early.

Rosenior clearly had his mind on the important Premier League away trip to Everton at the weekend – a crucial match as Chelsea sit outside the top five. The race for Champions League qualification and the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale accurately reflect their current reality.

Before kick-off, Chelsea tried to emphasize their "world champions" title, with a grand introduction and a "Champions of the World" banner at the Shed End – a reminder to PSG of their defeat in New York. But instead of staging a miraculous comeback, Chelsea were dragged back down to earth.

And after this defeat, questions about the correctness of their team-building methods, especially their ambition to conquer the Champions League, will undoubtedly become increasingly intense.
