AC Milan: Leao's Anger, Milan's Problem

Milan lost 0-1 at Lazio and effectively abandoned their Scudetto ambitions. The issue for Milan in that match, and many others, is that they missed both scoring opportunities and chances to create scoring opportunities.

The focus was Rafael Leao's fury when he was substituted midway through the second half. The image of the Portuguese forward complaining incessantly, requiring calming by captain Mike Maignan and coach Max Allegri, kicking a water bottle and throwing his jacket to the ground, became symbolic of a Milan side that is stuck, lacking ideas and lacking connection between its attacking stars.

Leao had reason to be dissatisfied. Earlier, he twice made runs exploiting space behind defender Adam Marusic, but in both instances, Christian Pulisic did not pass to him. Those were not simple passes, but also not beyond the ability of a player like Pulisic. In the first half, he also occupied an excellent position right in front of Lazio's goal, but Strahinja Pavlovic did not pass and took the shot himself. Leao's frustration shows a striker craving service, but also a player increasingly losing patience.

The problem does not stop at isolated moments. When Leao and Pulisic have both started in recent matches, their goal-scoring output has been very low. They have almost failed to generate synergy. Goals from one often come when the other has already left the pitch. This raises questions about the tactical compatibility between the two stars expected to be Milan's main attacking spearhead. When the team trails the league leader by over 20 goals, the attack lacking a stable coordination mechanism becomes a fatal bottleneck.

Rafael Leao's Anger Reflects Milan's Weakness

This season, Leao has been pulled into playing as a center forward more often, in Allegri's effort to solve the personnel puzzle. The initial idea was to create two flexible forwards, denying opposing defenders a fixed reference point. But in reality, Leao no longer has the space on the left flank to utilize his strengths, and when playing centrally, he has to turn his back more often, engage in more physical battles, and depend more on teammates. When the passes don't arrive, the sense of helplessness grows.

Leao's reaction upon being substituted thus carries the spontaneity of a player feeling he hasn't been given enough opportunity to rectify mistakes. He wanted to stay on the pitch during Milan's late-game pressure, believing that just one moment could turn the tide. Fairly speaking, Leao has not been without effort. He has accepted sacrificing his preferred role, playing even when not fully fit. However, 9 goals after 29 Serie A rounds is far too few for the expectations placed on the team's highest-paid star.

Allegri's challenge therefore is not just tactical, but also human management. In the dressing room after the match, he had to intervene to defuse tension between Leao and Pulisic. In terms of personality, both are not aggressive types, but on the pitch, the "misalignment" in their decision-making is costing Milan. If Allegri doesn't find a solution, Milan will continue to rely on individual moments instead of a coherent system.

The defeat against Lazio is therefore not just three points lost. It is a mirror reflecting an attack lacking a common voice, where Leao's anger becomes the clearest manifestation of the stagnation. And if Milan still harbors ambitions to return to the top, they must decisively solve the question: How to make their stars play together, rather than react against each other.
