Malaysian media collectively responded after the 0-3 forfeiture penalty

Top Malaysian sports publications simultaneously voiced their reactions upon the national team receiving a 0-3 forfeit verdict from the Asian Football Confederation in two matches during the 2027 Asian Cup qualification stage.

After a prolonged wait, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) imposed an appropriate penalty on the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and its national team, concerning the illicit naturalization of seven players.

Accordingly, the AFC ruled a 0-3 forfeit against the Malaysian national team in two matches of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, sequentially against Nepal and Vietnam. Moreover, FAM also received a financial penalty amounting to 50,000 USD.

Once the above information was confirmed by FAM, the foremost sports newspapers in the country uniformly issued notable reactions.

The New Straits Times expressed profound anguish with the headline: "Malaysian national team forfeits two matches, Asian Cup hopes vanish into thin air."

The Free Malaysia Today stated: "Two victories of the Malaysian national team in the Asian Cup qualifiers are annulled". The Twentytwo13 responded similarly: "AFC cancels the results of Malaysia's wins over Nepal and Vietnam in the Asian Cup qualifiers."

Meanwhile, the The Star appeared deeply shocked by the AFC's penalty: "FAM suffers a double blow as AFC voids two victories and imposes a financial fine."

This AFC penalty not only caused the Malaysian national team to lose points on the FIFA ranking, but also indirectly cost them their chance to participate in the 2027 Asian Cup finals, handing it over to Vietnam, the team immediately behind them in Group F. Given the current situation, the final match between the two teams is nearly merely procedural, no longer influencing the group standings.

The disciplinary action was issued after FIFA discovered FAM had falsified the naturalization documents of seven players during the qualification matches. Previously, FAM had submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to refute the allegations, however this body concluded there were signs of fraud, thereby paving the way for the AFC to apply stringent penalties.

Immediately afterward, FAM issued an official announcement, indicating it would send a document to the AFC's disciplinary and ethics committee to request clarification of the penalty's basis, before considering subsequent steps.
