ESPN has issued reactions following the news that the Malaysian national team received a 0-3 forfeiture penalty from the Asian Football Confederation, consecutively against Nepal and Vietnam.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has made an official decision, to impose a 0-3 forfeiture loss on the Malaysian national team in two matches of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, consecutively against Nepal and Vietnam. This information quickly attracted attention not only regionally but was also reported by many international media outlets.
Specifically, the ESPN reacted unexpectedly to AFC punishing both the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the national team. The leading American newspaper headline read: "Malaysia's Asian Cup dream ends as AFC penalty helps Vietnam secure a spot".
In its analysis, ESPN summarized the entire sequence of events, from FIFA's conclusions to the ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), while expressing regret over what the Malaysian national team had to face.
ESPN wrote: "CAS upheld part of the initial penalties imposed by FIFA on FAM and seven players including Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Hector Hevel, and Jon Irazabal.
Essentially, CAS agreed with FIFA in determining that FAM and the players committed violations. In the official announcement, the body stated that after reviewing evidence, the panel concluded that falsifying eligibility documents was factual, and the 12-month playing ban was deemed appropriate and proportionate to the players' involvement in the case...
Since these players were deemed ineligible, Malaysia's previous 2-0 win over Nepal and 4-0 win over Vietnam were annulled and converted into 0-3 losses.
From leading Group F in the Asian Cup qualifiers with a three-point gap after five consecutive wins, the Malaysian national team has now fallen behind Vietnam with a gap of up to six points.
With only one match remaining in the qualifiers, the Malaysian national team no longer has the ability to surpass Vietnam, which has secured its spot for the Asian Cup for the third consecutive time.
This is a regrettable outcome for the Malaysian national team, as they just returned to the Asian Cup in 2023 after a 16-year absence, and previously only needed to avoid a loss by more than four goals in the match against Vietnam on March 31 to secure a spot."
According to updated information, Malaysia is expected to send an official request to AFC to clarify the basis of the disciplinary decision before determining the next steps.
