The Opta supercomputer has issued predictions and assessments regarding the clash between Man City and Real Madrid in the return leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
Following a 0-3 defeat against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Man City will need to exert maximum effort if they hope to reverse the situation when they return to Etihad for the Champions League quarter-final second leg.
With the advantage of playing at home and a squad considered more balanced than their opponent, Pep Guardiola's team is still viewed as having the upper hand ahead of this rematch. Specifically, according to the supercomputer's prediction Opta, Man City has 58.5% chance of securing a victory. Conversely, Real Madrid is predicted to have only 22.1% probability of winning the match, while the likelihood of a draw is estimated at 19.4%.
Nevertheless, the opportunity for Man City to secure a quarter-final spot is quite low. In 10,000 simulations by the supercomputer, this team only advances in 13.4% of scenarios, and their current probability of winning the tournament is assessed at only 1.7%.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid holds a significant advantage in the race for a quarter-final berth, with a probability of progressing through the tie reaching 86.6%. The likelihood of the Royal club conquering its 16th European title is predicted by the supercomputer at 8.7%.
Additionally, the Manchester representative also does not receive support from historical voices compared to the La Liga giant.
According to statistics from Opta, Man City has lost 3 of their last 4 encounters with Real Madrid in the Champions League, securing only 1 win.
Notably, this number of defeats equals the total losses the English team suffered against Real Madrid in their first 12 meetings in the tournament, during which Man City had 4 wins and 5 draws.
On the other side, Real Madrid aims for its fifth time eliminating Man City in the Champions League knockout stage. Previously, Los Blancos achieved this in the 2015/16, 2021/22, 2023/24, and 2024/25 seasons.
In Champions League history, only Bayern Munich has been eliminated by an opponent in the knockout stage more than 5 times. The German team has been eliminated from the tournament by Real Madrid 7 times.
Real Madrid had a favorable run-up before their visit to Etihad by securing a 4-1 victory over Elche. This result not only helps the Spanish Royal club continue to closely follow Barcelona in the La Liga title race but also significantly improves their recent form.
In the upcoming match, the availability of two key players Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe remains uncertain. Nevertheless, coach Alvaro Arbeloa has sufficient grounds to aim for a positive outcome, especially after Real Madrid's convincing performance in the first leg.
Regarding Man City, the draw against West Ham over the weekend to some extent shows signs of fatigue for this team in this season. Not only have they allowed Arsenal to widen the gap in the Premier League title race, the blue half of Manchester also faces the risk of an early exit from the Champions League.
However, the immediate challenge could also become motivation for Pep Guardiola and his players to demonstrate the resilience of a team that has conquered the trophy, while hoping to stage a comeback against the club dubbed the "King of the Champions League".
The match between Man City and Real Madrid will take place at 3:00 AM tomorrow morning (18/3).
