Chelsea receives record penalty for 7 unexpected transfers

Following a four-year probe, Chelsea is formally handed the most severe financial sanction in Premier League history for grave misconduct in transfer dealings during billionaire Roman Abramovich's era.

The Chelsea empire under former chairman Roman Abramovich was once a symbol of dazzling success, but the hidden aspects of its squad-building process have now been brought to light.

The Premier League organizing body has officially imposed a record-breaking penalty of £10.75 million on the London club after uncovering a series of undisclosed secret payments totaling £47.5 million between 2011 and 2018.

The investigation focused on 7 transfer deals that contributed to Chelsea's golden era. According to the findings, the club spent £23 million on unregistered agents to bring in renowned stars such as Eden Hazard, David Luiz, Nemanja Matic, Andre Schurrle, and Ramires.

Chelsea has been given a one-year transfer ban (suspended for two years) and banned from registering new academy players for nine months

Furthermore, an additional £19.3 million was transferred to third-party entities to complete the signing of Willian and Samuel Eto'o from Anzhi Makhachkala.

These "under-the-table" payments were made through foreign companies closely linked to Abramovich, allowing Chelsea to gain absolute advantage over competitors in securing signatures of top European stars at that time.

Notably, these violations were only discovered when the Clearlake Capital-Todd Boehly consortium conducted a book audit to acquire the club in 2022. Chelsea's new owners proactively reported these breaches to UEFA, FA, and the Premier League seeking transparency.

These violations were voluntarily reported by the new leadership under Todd Boehly after detecting irregularities during the club's acquisition process

Besides the financial penalty, Chelsea also faces a one-year transfer ban (suspended for two years) and is prohibited from signing academy players for nine months. Although they avoided direct point deduction, risks remain if the club continues to breach financial regulations during the suspended period.

Additionally, "The Blues" are confronting 74 other alleged violations from the English Football Association (FA) related to agent payments from 2009 to 2022. This case serves as a costly lesson for world football on the strictness of financial fair play rules, even for glories that belong to the past.
