Captain Maung Maung Lwin of the Myanmar national team announced his departure from the team following accusations of assaulting a woman in the stands.
Forward Maung Maung Lwin has received a heavy penalty from the Myanmar Football Federation after a controversial incident on the field. The 1995-born player was banned for 6 months and fined 3 million kyats (over 37 million VND) for his uncontrolled behavior during the match against Yadanarbon.
According to some reports, during the tense match, Lwin rushed into the spectator area and clashed with a female fan. Television footage captured the woman continuously screaming as she was attacked by this forward, causing the incident to quickly become sensational.
However, the captain of the Myanmar national team stated that his reaction stemmed from being severely insulted. Lwin asserted that the fan had uttered provocative, defamatory, and even racially discriminatory remarks targeting him.
Not only targeting the player himself, this woman also mentioned Lwin's family. That caused the 1995-born forward to lose his composure and act beyond limits, leading to a heavy penalty from the Myanmar Football Federation.
Nevertheless, public opinion in the country still did not side with this player. Media and fans unanimously condemned Lwin's violent act, despite his claim that he was a victim of discriminatory insults.
On March 16, Maung Maung Lwin announced his departure from the Myanmar national team on social media: “The moment I and my parents were insulted, I reacted strongly and was penalized for 6 months. Feeling unprotected, I decided to leave the Myanmar national team. But my love for football will always remain the same.”
Maung Maung Lwin is considered one of the best players Myanmar football has ever produced. The most notable highlight of his career was scoring to help the ASEAN All Stars defeat Manchester United in a friendly match in 2025. This match also featured many stars from the Vietnamese national team, including coach Kim Sang Sik on the coaching bench.
