Coach Xabi Alonso firmly decides to lead Liverpool

Xabi Alonso's agent, Inaki Ibanez, is said to have addressed rumors concerning his client's possible move to take over as Liverpool manager.

During his playing career, Xabi Alonso wore the Liverpool jersey from 2004 to 2009. During this period, the Spanish midfielder played 236 matches and scored 6 goals.

Alonso was also part of the Liverpool squad that achieved the historic comeback in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul. In that match, he scored the equalizing goal to make it 3-3 against AC Milan, contributing to The Kop completing an unbelievable turnaround.

After retiring, Alonso transitioned into coaching and quickly impressed in his role as manager of Real Sociedad B. This initial success led Bayer Leverkusen to appoint the former midfielder to lead the team.

Following the Bundesliga championship season with Leverkusen in 2024, Alonso's name quickly became a target pursued by many major clubs. Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Man City were all reportedly interested in the Spanish strategist.

Alonso subsequently joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, but was dismissed in January this year after a series of unsatisfactory results.

In the context of Liverpool struggling under Arne Slot, Alonso is rumored to possibly return to Anfield next summer.

Previously, the Okdiario from Spain reported Alonso had reached an agreement to take over Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season if coach Arne Slot fails to help the team win the Champions League title.

However, Alonso's agent, Inaki Ibanez, has denied this information. He shared with WinWin: “The rumors about having an agreement with Liverpool are merely media speculation.”

Some sources also indicate that Alonso is currently considering various offers and will make a decision about his future in the coming period.

Meanwhile, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirms: “Currently, there is no agreement, negotiation, or progress between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool. I can assure you that nothing has been decided.”

Romano also stated that Liverpool will conduct an internal review at the end of the season: “At the end of the season, Liverpool will have a comprehensive review regarding players, coaching staff, and club personnel.”

He added: “There will be an internal discussion to review the season, but at this moment no decisions have been made. There is no agreement with Xabi Alonso. Of course, Liverpool still holds great respect for him, as Alonso was a former player of the club and is now a good coach. The relationship between both sides remains very positive, but as of now no agreement has been signed.”
