The match between Napoli and Lecce was interrupted by a horrifying moment when midfielder Lameck Banda suddenly collapsed, leaving coach Antonio Conte and tens of thousands of spectators utterly stunned.
Early morning on March 15th, Serie A round 29 witnessed an incident that left the entire Diego Armando Maradona stadium breathless. As the match between Napoli and Lecce was nearing its final minutes, Lecce's midfielder Lameck Banda suddenly collapsed onto the grass without any collision at that moment.
The incident occurred as Lecce was preparing to take a corner kick to seek an equalizing goal. Witnessing this scene, Napoli's coach Antonio Conte, who was standing nearby, could not remain calm. He immediately rushed onto the pitch, urgently signaling for the medical team. After several minutes of first aid in a tense atmosphere, the Zambian player was carried off the field on a stretcher and transported directly to the hospital by ambulance.
Speaking to DAZN Italy after the match, coach Antonio Conte, still shaken, recounted: “I was standing right there to organize the defensive line and saw him appear slightly unsteady. He began to fall and put his hand on his chest, which truly worried me. I immediately rushed onto the pitch to call for help. Banda is a good lad, he is about to have a child, so I wish the best for him and his family.”
According to the latest reports from Italian media, the cause of Banda's collapse was a severe impact to the chest area during earlier confrontations. Fortunately, after timely emergency treatment, the 2001-born midfielder's health gradually stabilized and he regained consciousness.
Regarding the match's developments, Lecce caused a major surprise by taking the lead from the 3rd minute thanks to Jamil Siebert's precise shot. However, Napoli demonstrated the resilience of the favored team in the second half. Rasmus Hojlund - the striker in exceptional form - scored the equalizer, before Matteo Politano secured the 2-1 victory in the 67th minute.
This result helps Napoli firmly consolidate their 3rd place position on the standings with 59 points, closing in on AC Milan and maintaining a slim hope in the title race with Inter Milan. Conversely, Lecce remains stagnant in 16th place, facing heavy pressure in the relegation battle. Yet, after all, what most concerns the fans now is Lameck Banda's recovery condition.
