UEFA is contemplating an uncommon sanction concerning the yellow cards of two Bayern Munich players, potentially granting a major benefit to Real Madrid should the club reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
This year's Champions League Round of 16 has been vibrant not only due to goals but also due to legal disputes behind the scenes. The current focus centers on Bayern Munich's devastating 6-1 victory over Atalanta.
Although the ticket to advance is almost securely in the hands of Vincent Kompany's squad, the two yellow cards received by Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich for time-wasting at the end of the match are now under UEFA's scrutiny.
The suspicion is that this pair intentionally "cleaned their cards" to be suspended in the already settled return match, ensuring their availability for the quarter-finals without risking further disciplinary cards. If UEFA concludes this was deliberate, an additional penalty will be imposed—something European football hasn't seen since 2019.
According to precedent, Sergio Ramos (2019) and Dani Carvajal (2017/18) were previously banned for an extra match for similar conduct. Ramos even caused a stir by inadvertently admitting the incident in the media.
Responding to the allegations, Joshua Kimmich has spoken out to deny them: “I think if he hadn’t gotten angry, there wouldn’t have been a yellow card. I am someone who wants to play every match.”
However, this midfielder also hinted that with the heavy victory in the first leg, missing the return match is “feasible”. These suggestive statements have given UEFA inspectors further reason to thoroughly review the match footage.
If a two-match ban (including one natural suspension and one additional penalty) is enforced, Bayern Munich will lose two of their most important players right in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
This would be a massive boost for Real Madrid—the team that just secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Man City thanks to Federico Valverde's hat-trick. Based on the tournament bracket, Real Madrid is almost certain to meet Bayern Munich in the next round.
The opponent losing midfield orchestrator Kimmich and high-performing spark Olise would significantly reduce the pressure on Alvaro Arbeloa's squad. Champions League history always records small details that alter major scenarios, and this time, the yellow cards in Bergamo could be the key unlocking the semi-final door for the Spanish representative.
