This season's Champions League quarter-final matches witnessed a series of forgettable mistakes by goalkeepers playing for English clubs. From Manchester City's loss to Real Madrid to the disastrous performances of Tottenham and Chelsea's goalkeepers, fans reacted fiercely on social media.
Manchester City goalkeeper "forgets" to use hands inside the penalty area
Manchester City fans were extremely angry with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after his mistake in the match against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
Donnarumma's mistake occurred in the opening goal. The Italian goalkeeper rushed out of the goal when Federico Valverde broke through to face him. However, after the Real Madrid midfielder passed him, Donnarumma did not use his hands to catch the ball even though he was still inside the penalty area. Instead, he just stood watching Valverde easily shoot into the empty net, causing fans great frustration.
Many fans believed Donnarumma seemed to "forget he was still inside the penalty area," so he didn't use his hands to block the ball. One person wrote on social media X: "Donnarumma didn't touch the ball with his hands because he forgot he was still in the penalty area!".
Another fan commented: "He lost focus too early… truly a disaster." Another remarked: "Such misfortune… a miscalculation." An angry fan argued: "That's why PSG sold him."

Fans believed the Italian goalkeeper had "forgotten" he was still inside the penalty zone.
Despite the error in the first conceded goal, Donnarumma could do nothing against Valverde's other two goals. The Uruguayan midfielder fired a beautiful shot to make it 2-0, before completing his hat-trick with a close-range finish just before halftime. This was Valverde's first hat-trick in Real Madrid colors, concluding his excellent performance.
In the second half, Donnarumma somewhat redeemed himself by successfully saving Vinícius Júnior's penalty. However, Manchester City still lost 0-3 after an under-par performance and will face an extremely difficult task in the return leg at Etihad Stadium.
Tottenham and Chelsea also suffer from goalkeeper errors
Donnarumma's mistake was only part of a series of serious errors by English football goalkeepers in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Earlier, Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky had a disastrous performance in Tottenham Hotspur's match against Atletico Madrid. Kinsky slipped, allowing Atletico to score the opening goal. Later, a faulty pass from him gave Julian Alvarez the chance to make it 3-0.
The poor performance forced manager Igor Tudor to substitute this goalkeeper off after just 15 minutes of play. Tottenham subsequently lost heavily 2-5.

In another match, midfielder Enzo Fernandez became furious with goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen after a mistake in Chelsea's match against PSG.
Chelsea were still holding a balanced 2-2 score in the 74th minute of the first leg at Parc des Princes. However, PSG's relentless late-game attack helped the hosts win 5-2 and gain a three-goal advantage before the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
Jorgensen was considered responsible for at least two of the three late conceded goals. The first mistake angered Fernandez. The Danish goalkeeper could have passed to the wings but instead made a risky pass through the center and was intercepted by Bradley Barcola. Immediately after, Vitinha was served a chance to lob over Jorgensen's head to make it 3-2.

TV cameras captured Fernandez shouting loudly at Jorgensen's face, waving his arms angrily, and even throwing the ball towards the goalkeeper after that incident. Jorgensen also reacted, but many Chelsea fans sided with the Argentine midfielder.
On social media, many believed Jorgensen's mistake was even worse than Kinsky's disastrous performance against Atletico.
One wrote: "Jorgensen, this mistake is worse than Kinsky yesterday." Another commented: "Enzo is extremely angry with Jorgensen! He cost us the match." Another fan said: "I would also go crazy like that." A fourth remarked: "This moment perfectly captures the frustration of every Chelsea fan watching the match"...
Jorgensen's disaster did not end there. In stoppage time, he pushed away Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's shot, but inadvertently pushed the ball into the corner of the net, causing Chelsea to concede another goal.
After the match, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior faced a difficult decision: should he bring Robert Sanchez back as starter in the match against Newcastle United at the weekend?
