Manchester United suffers a heavy blow despite not playing in the Champions League

Manchester United's prospects for appearing in the Champions League in the 2026/27 season are now shaky after the underwhelming performances of English teams in the first leg of the round of 16.

According to the new format of European competitions, the two nations with the best performances in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League will be awarded an additional Champions League spot by UEFA, known as the European Performance Spot (EPS).

This means the leagues of these countries will have one more representative in the Champions League. EPS spots are determined based on the performance of clubs from each league in European competitions. The total coefficient points of the teams are divided by the number of participating clubs to calculate the average score.

Currently, England still holds an advantage with nine clubs competing in European tournaments and leads the race for the additional spot.

However, the situation has become less favorable after a series of poor results this week. Manchester City lost 0-3 to Real Madrid, Chelsea suffered a 2-5 defeat against PSG, while Arsenal was held to a 1-1 draw by Bayer Leverkusen. A day earlier, Tottenham also lost 2-5 to Atletico Madrid, Liverpool fell 0-1 to Galatasaray, while Newcastle drew 1-1 with Barcelona at home.

This promises to make the race for the top four in the Premier League more intense and exciting, especially if the league does not receive an extra fifth Champions League spot. In that context, Manchester United, absent from this competition for the past two seasons, must strive for every point to keep hope alive for returning to Europe's most prestigious stage.

Nevertheless, England still leads the coefficient rankings with an average score of 22.513, nearly 4.5 points ahead of second-place Spain with 18.031 and third-place Germany with 18.000.

According to the scoring system, each win earns two coefficient points, while a draw is worth one point. Additionally, teams receive bonus points for advancing through knockout rounds. Specifically, the Champions League adds 1.5 points, the Europa League adds 1 point, and the Conference League adds 0.5 points.

Previously, teams also received bonus points based on their ranking in the league phase, with the Champions League still weighted higher than the other competitions.

England remains the leading nation in UEFA's coefficient rankings

Currently, Bayern Munich is almost certain to advance past Atalanta after a 6-1 victory, while Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid also hold significant advantages in their respective matches.

The series of unfavorable results for English clubs in European competitions has therefore added pressure to the matches scheduled for Thursday.

In the Europa League round of 16, Aston Villa will face Lille, while Nottingham Forest meets Midtjylland. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will play AEK Larnaca in the Conference League.

If England's representatives achieve positive results and advance to the next round, current concerns could be alleviated. However, if the situation continues to deteriorate, the landscape of the race for the additional spot could change significantly.
