Can the fifth-placed Premier League team still qualify for the Champions League next season? England's six teams fail to win in the 16th round, Manchester United must control their own fate.

At the end of the Champions League group stage, Premier League fans were still dreaming of monopolizing the top four spots and turning the Champions League into an English championship. Unexpectedly, after the first leg of the 16th round, none of the six participating English teams won. Arsenal and Newcastle United drew, while Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham are already trailing by three goals, and Liverpool also lost by one goal. Now, Premier League teams face the risk of a complete wipeout, and cynical British media have directly removed the crown from the Premier League lion emblem.

So, can the fifth-placed Premier League team still secure a Champions League qualification spot for next season? Previously, this seemed almost certain, but with the poor performance in the first leg of the 16th round, fans are beginning to worry about a dramatic shift in the situation.

After the group stage, England leads significantly in UEFA's coefficient rankings, which measure the performance of clubs from each country across Europe's three competitions this season. If the Premier League can maintain its top two position, then the league's fifth-placed team will directly qualify for the Champions League group stage for the second consecutive season.

UEFA calculates which two leagues will receive additional European competition spots by assessing coefficient points based on the performance of clubs from each league in the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League, then dividing these points by the number of clubs from that league participating in European competitions this season.

In UEFA club competitions, each win earns the league 2 points, a draw earns 1 point, and a loss earns none. Additionally, bonus points are awarded based on each club's final ranking in the European leagues. The weight of these points varies depending on the competition.

For example, topping the Champions League group stage earns 12 bonus points, topping the Europa League group earns 6 bonus points, and topping the Europa Conference League group earns 4 bonus points.

Arsenal ranked first in this season's Champions League group stage, thus receiving the highest bonus points. Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Manchester City also contributed double-digit bonus points for the Premier League by reaching the top eight, while Newcastle, ranked 12th, earned 9.25 points.

From the European 16th round onwards, advancing each round in the knockout stage also earns additional bonus points. The weight of these points varies by competition: 1.5 points for Champions League advancement, 1 point for Europa League, and only 0.5 points for Europa Conference League.

After the first leg of the Champions League 16th round on Wednesday, the Premier League still leads the rankings, but its advantage has narrowed.

Before the matches, the Premier League's average coefficient score was a high 22.40 points, with Germany's Bundesliga second at only 17.86 points, and Spain's La Liga third at 17.78 points. Now, the Premier League scores 22.513 points, La Liga jumps to second with 18.031 points, and the Bundesliga falls to third with 18.000 points.

This list changes after each round. To maintain the top position, the second leg is crucial for the Premier League. Even trailing by three goals, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham must strive to win; even if they cannot advance, they can contribute final points for their association.

Additionally, Arsenal and Liverpool are likely the Premier League teams with better chances to advance in the second leg at home. Last season, only two Premier League teams reached the Champions League quarter-finals: Arsenal and Aston Villa, with only Arsenal reaching the semi-finals but ultimately missing the final. That did not hinder the Premier League from securing an additional Champions League spot.

Because the performance of Premier League teams in the Europa League and Europa Conference League will also be crucial. Villa and Nottingham Forest have both reached the Europa League 16th round, with Villa being the top favorite for the title under Europa League expert coach Unai Emery. In the Europa Conference League, Crystal Palace will strive to win again. Winning these two European titles could significantly boost the Premier League's points.

Manchester United, absent from European competitions this season, cannot influence the fight for additional qualification spots. However, Carrick's team can now control their own fate in the Premier League. They currently rank third; maintaining this position means they need not worry about whether the fifth-placed team can play in the Champions League. This Sunday's home match against Villa is key, as both teams currently share the same points. Villa also plays a Europa League knockout match on Thursday, so the Red Devils, resting and waiting, should reasonably win at Old Trafford.
