European-born Vietnamese star reacts strongly after first call-up to Vietnam national team

Patrik Lê Giang couldn't conceal his happiness following his first inclusion in the Vietnam national team call-up list.

After being summoned by coach Kim Sang-Sik to join the Vietnam national team training camp for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, goalkeeper Lê Giang Patrik appeared extremely excited. During the afternoon training session on March 11th, the goalkeeper from Ho Chi Minh City Police Club trained with great enthusiasm and exerted maximum effort in every situation.

Previously, Ho Chi Minh City Police Club confirmed that three players were called up to the Vietnam national team for the upcoming training camp, including two forwards Nguyễn Tiến Linh and Đinh Thanh Bình, and goalkeeper Patrik Lê Giang. The inclusion of these three players helps the club contribute additional notable elements to the national team's squad.

Among them, the case of goalkeeper Patrik Lê Giang has attracted significant attention from fans. This Vietnamese-born goalkeeper officially obtained Vietnamese citizenship on January 28th, after more than three years of living and playing in V.League. Completing the procedures allows him to qualify to wear the Vietnam national team jersey, while also bringing more competition to the goalkeeper position.

Coach Kim Sang Sik will certainly have to carefully consider selecting the starting goalkeeper for the upcoming matches against Bangladesh (friendly) and Malaysia (2027 Asian Cup qualifiers). Currently, Patrik Lê Giang, Đặng Văn Lâm, and Filip Nguyễn are all quality names, possessing good physique and maintaining stable form recently.

Nevertheless, each goalkeeper still has areas needing improvement. Filip Nguyễn is rated highly for his expertise, but his ability to communicate in Vietnamese with the defense is not yet truly fluent. Đặng Văn Lâm is rich in international match experience, yet his foot-playing ability remains a limitation.

Meanwhile, Patrik Lê Giang is displaying impressive form, but this is his first call-up to the national team, so he needs more time to integrate into the overall playing style. Besides the three names mentioned, Coach Kim Sang Sik also has another notable option: Trung Kiên – the number one goalkeeper of U23 Vietnam, who is showing very good form in V.League.
