The most recent meeting between the two teams took place on November 1, 2023, in Olympic qualifiers. In this match, the Japanese women's national team secured a 2-0 victory over the Vietnamese women's team. Shortly before that, at ASIAD 2023 on September 28, 2023, Japan also demonstrated superior strength by defeating Vietnam with a heavy score of 7-0.

At the 2022 Women's Asian Cup, the two teams met again in the group stage on January 24, 2022. Despite their efforts, the Vietnamese women's national team could not create a surprise against the strong opponent and accepted a 0-3 defeat.
