Following their elimination from the Asian Cup group stage, the Iranian women's team no longer has an opportunity to participate in the World Cup.
Despite their efforts, the Iranian women's team failed to achieve a surprise result in the 2026 Asian Cup group stage. The West Asian representative concluded their journey with three consecutive losses. This outcome was not unexpected, as Iranian women's football is not as strong as the men's team and faced a challenging group with Australia, South Korea, and the Philippines.
In the first two matches, Iran fought hard but lost to South Korea 0-3 and Australia 0-4. In the final match, they faced Southeast Asian representative Philippines, who also needed a win to advance from the group stage.
A goal in each half secured the Philippines women's team a third-place finish in Group A by defeating Iran 2-0, and they hoped this performance would be enough to advance as one of the best third-place teams. For Iran, this meant elimination from the Asian Cup group stage and the end of their hopes for World Cup qualification.
Earlier, during the opening match's national anthem ceremony, the Iranian women's team stood solemnly facing forward but did not sing. In the technical area, the coaching staff and substitute players also remained silent. Head coach Marziyeh Jafari alone smiled slightly as the national anthem played.
This is not the first time an Iranian football team chose not to sing the national anthem at a major tournament. During the 2022 World Cup, the Iranian men's team also remained silent during the anthem, amid tense domestic protests.
Prior to this, the 26-member Iranian women's team arrived in Gold Coast days before unrest escalated at home. The complex developments nearly disrupted communication and left them without direct support from their country, as domestic security became sensitive.
