Van Dijk exclaimed 'excellent' about a Liverpool youngster

Liverpool secured a spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals after defeating Wolves 3-1, with a young player's performance earning special praise from Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool delivered a convincing comeback by beating Wolves 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round early on March 7 (Vietnam time). Following a disappointing Premier League loss days earlier, coach Arne Slot's team entered the match with strong determination to regain confidence. One of the standout highlights for the visitors was young player Rio Ngumoha, who was given a rare opportunity to start.

The 18-year-old winger impressed with his speed and confidence in handling situations. From the early minutes, Ngumoha continuously disrupted Wolves' flank with bold dribbling and was ready to confront defenders directly. This performance led captain Virgil van Dijk to lavish praise after the match concluded.

“Rio (Ngumoha) played excellently. I’m genuinely very happy for him,” Van Dijk shared. The Dutch defender also emphasized the youngster's special potential: “We all see he is a special talent, particularly in his 1v1 ability and how he drives straight at defenders.”

According to Van Dijk, Ngumoha impressed not only with his skills but also showed a very good attitude during his development in the first team. “He is a good lad, we always care for and support him, and he needs to keep learning. Today was a great day for him,” the Liverpool captain added.

On the pitch, Liverpool also demonstrated superiority in the second half to decide the match. Andy Robertson opened the scoring with a dangerous long-range shot in the 50th minute before Mohamed Salah doubled the lead just three minutes later, with the goal confirmed after VAR intervention. Curtis Jones then added another goal to help Liverpool almost certainly secure the win.

In stoppage time, Hee Chan Hwang scored a consolation goal for Wolves, but that was insufficient to change the outcome. The 3-1 victory secured Liverpool's place in the FA Cup quarter-finals and somewhat relieved pressure for coach Arne Slot. For Ngumoha personally, this match is seen as marking a notable step forward in his journey to establish himself in Liverpool's first team.
